Now that we have Zeus (after a couple years without dogs) I can't imagine not having a German Shepherd anymore. But Zeus is also the worst GSD we've ever had. What a crazy dog!

Sounds like you REALLY hate Zeus! Amazingly, he sounds like our Zack, who was fixated on my husband!

And our Rottie, Kirby who is the same.

And Miss Molly, who came to join us...

basically any dog we've ever been lucky enough to care for!

And my wife has been talking about another GSD to keep Zeus company. The last time we did that it was nothing but trouble!

Yeah, not sure what I did wrong. Just trust me when I say he's the best looking GSD you've ever seen! Not that I'm biased or anything...

I hear ya. One of our males was diagnosed with HD at a fairly young age. But he lived to be about 13/14 years old. I can remember juicing him up on pain meds only twice in that time. So I don't think he was that bad off if the diagnosis was even valid. Actually the vet on Union Lake Rd. across from Arby's was the one who thought he had HD. Now we go to the vet on Cooley by the Entertainment Tonight video rental store.

Now that we have Zeus (after a couple years without dogs) I can't imagine not having a German Shepherd anymore. But Zeus is also the worst GSD we've ever had. What a crazy dog! When I head for bed he races me there to see who gets my spot on the bed. And if any TV is on in the house he's glued to it. Damn dog watches more TV than I do. And don't let him see a show with another dog in it either. If he does, he won't shut up until you turn off the TV. He'll growl at it, whine, yipe, do circles, sit in front of the TV tilting his head in strange directions and blocks everyone's view with his ears. Wait, did I say I couldn't imagine not having a GSD? Hmm...

PS. Putting him outside doesn't help either. He sits on the deck waiting for a squirrel to enter the yard or he'll watch the clouds pass overhead and go berserk when a plane or helicopter gets close. Ye-gads...

Jon.

We used to take him to Springfield Vet Clinic up Dixie. In hindsight, Guenter always displayed signs that something wasnt right with his hips, he never, and i mean never, liked his back legs touched. But when they are a puppy, even the vet told us that could be a normal reaction so we never questioned it really. Then we neutered him (2 months prior to him being dx'ed with HD) and it was after that he started limping. My assumption is it was from his legs being spread for the surgery that worsened the underlying condition. So he went in for xrays and it was confirmed, he had HD...bad! He also had Spondylosis (spurs in his spine). So we went the pain med route and it wasnt helping, so we decided to let him live it up as long as he could. 6 weeks after being diagnosed, he could barely stand/walk. Then one morning I woke to find he had started chewing a softball sized hole through his fur....that told me he was in a lot of pain and that is when we decided to put him down.

Sorry for the novel, but it was so hard to do that. Thats why we are taking a break from the breed, I am so afraid of it happening again! That said, I do terribly miss his presence, it's weird to say, but when I am home alone, I never worried with him here...he always made the house seem safe.

Needless to say, I see another one in our future, so HOPEFULLY if MI's housing market ever improves, we can get some more land because that is one thing our guy needed...roaming room. We always said that if we had a few acres, we'd never see him again..lol.

And that is funny about Zeus, he sounds a lot like Guenter..he LOVED watching dogs on TV.

I've got to get new pictures of Zeus to post. He's starting to fill out a bit more and beginning to have that intimidating look.

He went for two guys last week too. They came to the door trying to sell something and he was moving the front window outward as he hit it with his nose. When I answered the door the first thing they asked was "does he bite?". I told them "Ya, he has teeth right?" At that point they told me they were there to sell us something but they would leave instead.

Beta: That second shot of Rebel is awesome, good eye contact.

nontetheredbrain: you say your girl is 4. Has she calmed down yet? Mine is 4 in July and she is still a crackhead! :) I've had shepherd mixes before but Mia is my first pure bred. Some hardcore breeders would argue that because she is a white shepherd. She is so full of life, energy and personality. I've thought about getting another but can't imagine two with so much energy :)

Good looking dogs everyone.

^^ No, she is still a crazy puppy, I can't wait until she calms down. ;pullshair: On the white Shepherd, family members had one 16 years ago, there is definitely something different with them. I lived with it for about 1 1/2 yrs, a male.

awww, thank you so much NTB! Oh i know what you are saying, just days before i was asking the breeder about what age should they pop up since she's almost 5 mths old...i'm crate training cassie, i dozed off on the couch on Easter Eve, morning came, i looked up at her and there she sat, ears standing straight up and looking all so proud! I was all over her telling her how beautiful she was, haha..again and again, she's learned to tolerate such doting. Another great day for the memory books. I'd love to see Shayne :D

rondaj's post of Cassie and the ears made me look back at some old puppy shots of Mia, this shot was between 7 and 8 weeks, right after we got her. I remember one ear standing up before the other, I'll see if I can find any of those shots later. Hilarious. This couldn't have been long after I got back into photography.

Wow, Kobe has some monster ears! It always amazes me at how well they grow into them. Our new pup has fairly large ears too. Every time I see her I think they look like sails on a ship moving her along...

Thanks. There are times when I think he actually knows I'm taking his picture so he poses...

I've learned a lot from Zeus too. When he was younger I thought it would be funny to cut a slit in a tennis ball and put it on the door knob to our sons bedroom so he could get in. I even showed him how to turn the knob and get into the room! Real funny... But it didn't click in my head that after that he would remember how to open doors! Ya, it's a bummer when he comes walking into the bathroom to see what you are doing. He also gets mad if you go outside and leave him in the house. So mad he'll lock the door. My wife has waited for our son to get home from school more than once to let her back in.

haha does he do damage to the door knobs? My aunt use to have a rhodesian ridgeback that crushed a door knob on fourth of july b/c it was scared of the sounds. I want to teach mine to do something, tracking maybe so he has something to do to make his stimulate whats inside his head ;)

We've been lucky with Zeus. He hasn't really damaged much. The two we had before ate more furniture than we could afford at one point. I think the real trick is to keep them busy. Zeus has been in training since he was a pup. Isis will be too as soon as we can come up with the money. We have a local K-9 trainer for the police and sheriff's office that is great.

Here's one of our old GSD's (Lord Sebastian) with our son when he was a cute little guy. Sorry for the quality it's a scan of a really old snapshot. Sebastian was the GSD of GSD's. The amount of abuse that dog put up with was nothing short of amazing. Jonathan would ride him, park his hotwheels in his ears, poke him in the eyes, take food out of his mouth (and eat it), sleep on top of him, hang on his tail, pull his hair and countless other things I'll think of later! Amazing dog...

So he's not using too much bite pressure on the door knobs? I'd almost think that his teeth would slip some on a metal knob. Rambo's being kept busy and doesn't chew on any furniture, we're starting to teach him to track scents and on the first day he's already tracking 15 feet outdoors no problem

As I posted earlier, we picked up our GS puppy this past Thursday, and now the rest of the story (it will be familier to most). Jeter is suppose to be my wife and boy's dog and it was going to be their responsibility to feed, groom and take him out and train him how to lift his leg. First night 3:30am, the elbow to the side, honey, do you hear the puppy crying? No dear, not until you woke me up! So, as I knew from the beginning, Jeter will be my dog (great for me) and I will be the one training and feeding him, as I have trained the previous two GS. So we are into day three and yes, I'm still the one getting up between 3-4:00am when my wife gives me the elbow. I'm still the only one that manages to get him to go to the bathroom outside, my wife is 0 for 3, I think it will be harder to train her than Jeter. We do love our puppies don't we!

Hahaha... My wife actually does the potty thing at night so I can get up for work in the mornings. Isis is a potty terror though. She'll let us know when she has to poop by whining and ringing the bell but she'll be outside, come inside and pee. It's getting old real fast. Zeus will come tell us if she goes in the house too. He's also still having issues with her just being here.

We prepare about two weeks of food for the dogs ahead of time and freeze it. That way they have food on hand for meals every day. Dry dog food is used as a supplement too.

Zeus had pretty normal sized ears. Isis on the other hand has some fairly large ears. But we get lots of comments about the dogs and their ears when in public. It's actually a problem at times. People crowd around them for some reason. I tend to get uptight when it happens and I think the dogs pick up on my mood which probably isn't a good thing.

Mia was the first dog we crate trained. That was the deal. She started hitting the door handle (as opposed to knobs)to the front door when she wanted out. She is 5 in July and doesn't do the door handle thing anymore. We may have had half a dozen accidents in the house, that's all. They are so smart. I love the breed.

The biggest problem I'm having with the ears is when we go to the dog park....everyone seems those satellite dishes on his head and decides to pet them in a non-graceful manner. So I have to walk around asking people not to pet his ears. But aside from that I do get a lot of people saying "look at those earsssss". I got some pictures of him I'll be posting up once I get back in town

Somewhere in this thread is a photo of Zack and Prancer.

Prancer died a couple of weeks ago, blissfully of old age. At home, with my husband and I with him, watching the sun set from the back yard.

We're not sure how old he was - we guessed around 14 or so. I picked him up from a shelter in Houston for a rescue group we worked with. He stole our hearts and never left.

He got such a stupid name because he had a beautiful gait and we always figured he'd go to his new 'forever' home (ha!).

He was one of the sweetest, most constant shepherds ever.

RIP Prancer Dail.
