Nice action shot of Zeus. My dog will rip & shred Tennis balls within minutes of getting them, luckily I found these: http://www.caninehardware.com/products/ultraballs/ultraballs.html
Though not as cheap as tennis balls, they're much more durable

Thanks!
I think we have a couple of those balls. They came with the ball chuckers (which are very cool too). But there's something about the "new" tennis balls that Zeus goes nuts over. He wants them more than a treat. Go figure.

They really are cool dogs. But, they require lots of attention! In my opinion they are by far the best dogs out there. They will die to protect you against anything. They will stay by your side through thick and thin and they never get tired of being around you. They are moody too. You need to watch them. Each GSD we have had seems ex-potentially smarter than the last one and they will out smart you at the first chance you give them.
But ya, they are cool dogs.

Thats cause at night he would become a criminal if left out.. He likes to "toy" with our cats from time to time. And chew on the wife's couch pillows when no one is looking.
Hopefully as he gets a little older we can start leaving him out more and more, till its all the time. Part of the reason I got him was to protect the family when I'm not here..

It'll get better with age. By 18 months'ish you won't even remember the chewing.

He's going to be a big boy! The "standard" for a 7 month old male is about 62 pounds.
Here's a copy of our growth spreadsheet. There are tabs for Zeus and Isis with another tab plotting them against the GSD breeding standards.

Thanks. I made the chart up just for the heck of it but over the last year it's become very popular with other GSD owners and a few humane societies on the east coast. Feel free to try it with your dog(s) too.
Good training is a big big deal. The two dogs we have right now are the first to be professionally trained and it's an amazing difference compared to a dog home trained. Of course I'm sure it doesn't hurt that the place we use also trains the K-9's for most of the police and sheriffs departments in the area. We attend classes up to 5 times a week depending on our schedules (we train with them). They are also trained in German, English and by visual signals (mainly hand signals). The hand signals are great too. If the dogs can see us we can control them no matter how far away from us they are. If they hear us but can't see us, the verbal commands work too. They only follow commands given by us as well. The hand signals trip people out too. They can't believe a dog is smart enough to understand "sign language".
I'm sure K9Ziggy can also vouch for the importance of good training. Especially as a LEO where every little detail is critical to stay safe.

Sorry to hear about the loss. I know how difficult it can be. Rex looks like a fantastic dog in those shots. The portrait of the two of you is great!
We have always had GSD's and all of our kids have grown up with GSD's. I was also raised with GSD's and could never really get used to not having them around. When our last male and female died we said no more dogs. But less than two years later we were back at it.

Thanks Jon. Rex was my first GSD. I've always had dogs. But, Rex was our third loss in three years (our two labs went before Rex, we lost a dog every year for three years almost to the day).
I said for a long time that I would never have another shep, as none would live up to Rex. Now, it's been about 9 months and I'm considering taking on another K9, or just getting a German bloodline shep.
Thanks again!

Like Jon said, there is no substitute for professional training.
I also used hand signal training with Rex, mostly German commands with a few English thrown in.
The intelligence and ability of the breed is astounding. Rex and I won PA Regional trials at the PA Chiefs of Police dog trials, 1st place in aggression and 1st place in obedience. We then followed up with PA state 2nd place in aggression work. Both rounds of aggression trials went to multiple rounds of "sudden death" with increasingly stressful situations. I can honestly say, that was the most fun I have ever had.
The rewards to having a trained dog are amazing, but it does entail a lot of work. I trained with Rex for 15-20 hours a week for years.
The most important thing is to HAVE FUN!!!!!!

Hi Morph. I am in the Lancaster area. A local trainer is Kay Ames, who is pretty good. I think her business is "Kay Ames Dog Training"?
Other than that everybody I know is pretty much PD/Schutzhund competition training. Our trainer passed away about 2 years ago of cancer, or I would have recommended him.
I am trying to get my dept. to send me to trainer svhool, but like any government entity it will take a while.
Good luck with your school search!

I posted some of these in their own thread (didn't know this one existed). This is Sarge our 1.5 year old pure bred GSD, we adopted from a rescue last summer. It's a long story but we became his fifth home and he was only 7 months old when we got him. He's now about 100 pounds, doing very well and is extremely smart.
This was shortly after we adopted him.

Sarge looks healthy and smart. Good shots too.
It seems like a lot of the smart GSD's end up being given away/disposed of. Maybe it's because they are too smart. A lot of people can't deal with their intelligence. GSD's require a lot of attention, interaction and companionship. They are not dogs you can buy and then ignore. They will find things to occupy themselves and I'll bet anything it won't be what the owners wanted them to do!

Good looking dog. Why so many homes?
The breeder was his first home, the lady that purchased him from the breeder was in an abusive relationship and gave up the dog to help get out of it, she gave Sarge to a friends parents that had an older GSD. The older dog did not like the young pup, that lady gave him to the GSD rescue. At least that's the story we were told. We then adopted him from the rescue, driving eight hours in each direction to meet and adopt him. There were seven other families on the list if we didn't take him.

Thanks for compliment Jon, both were shot with a 400 2.8
This is our second GSD and my wife's fourth so we are very familiar with the breed. Sarge is definitely a handful, he didn't have a whole lot of manners when we got him but you can teach him just about anything. He now rings a bell by the door when he wants to go outside. You are correct it's not a breed you can buy and ignore, he has a very high play drive.

Thank you. :) When he's awaken by a noise I make, he has a pretty ugly and rude expression, too. If he could talk, I think my feelings would really be hurt some times! LOL
I had a female I got when she was three. She died at age 12 in July-07. I got a rescue dog that September. She was estimated to be 2-4. As gray as her muzzle was getting, I think she had to be on the older end of that range. She was diagnosed with a tumor in April, and she died a few weeks ago. The boy above almost died the week before her from a severe intestinal infection. My doggie world has been rough since late March till just recently.
This thread has been very good for me. I've been so upset over mine, I had just about decided not to get another for a long time (after the boy's time comes). The female I lost in 2007 still gets to me. I can barely look at her photos. And the girl I lost a few weeks ago was an angel. But seeing all the beautiful GSDs in this thread has me learning towards getting another. There is just nothing else like them. Every single one is special.

Clicking on the photo should link to a slightly larger image (1200x800) that really shows how dirty he is at the moment. Playing around with a new 50mm 1.4 and rather impressed with sharpness to say the least....and playing with off-camera flash also to keep myself amused.
I'll get a photo of his brother and post later, remarkably different looking dog considering from the same litter.

So many GSD's, warms my heart to see all these much loved dogs. I have just applied to adopt a GSD from a rescue home for the breed and it is shattering to see how many ill treated abused ones there are to choose from. Hopefully it will work out and we will get our fifth GSD soon. All the others are gone now but never to be forgotten.

Well, I'm new to the forum, but I saw the GSD pics and had to post. I have two, a 10-year old female and a 5-month old male puppy. They're both a couple of crazy doggies! Here's a couple of shots I made recently. Remy is the pup. He's just 3-months old in the shot with the mud. Dana is my female. She's still very active for an older dog, and she's made sure Remy knows who the queen bee is in this house.

OK, here is a photo of my last GSD Kheta shortly before we lost her. A very sad picture for me, bitter sweet but one of very few digital photos I have of any of my GSD's. Next stage is Monday when our home is inspected for suitability and to discuss the type of GSD we want. Here is hoping!

Great, Mike! Take some good shots of the guy and make sure you post them. I'm glad you got a shelter dog. I work for the prison system in NC, and we have the "New Leash on Life" program at our unit. Inmates are trained by a professional to work with shelter dogs on basic commands, then we try to find homes for them. We had a beautiful shepard that was so badly abused, he wouldn't come out of his kennel. We had to have two of the inmates carry him. But by the end of his training, he was much, much better. One of the inmate's family members ended up adopting him. Good luck!

Hee, hee. It's so hard to get a picture of a shepard with their mouths closed, isn't it? In that first one, it looks like his mouth is big enough to fit your head into. Here's one more of my two playing King of the Pool. Or, more correctly, Queen of the Pool, since Dana usually wins. Glad to have you in the forum!

Cool.
Many years ago we had a fair sized kiddie pool just for the dogs. One day my wife is watching our female swim around and she realized that the dog was holding her breath and looking around under water (little air bubbles were coming to the surface). Then she would dive down to the bottom and try to tear the liner. Well, she only did that so many times before she got the liner and brought it back to the surface. In pieces. That was the end of that pool! I might have some old snap shots of that someplace...

Unfortunately when we brought our new rescue boy home we have discovered that he has major problems. He has very weak unstable hips which could be hip dysplasia or an old injury or that awful neurological spinal chord degeneration disease. Our last GSD had that spinal one in her old age and his gait reminds me very much of that. The only one that anything can be done about is the dysplasia which in his case might well be major and expensive surgery with no insurance. I could send him back at this stage but he needs a home some where and not a kennels and he desperately needs love following me everywhere like a shadow. How can I make his life any more miserable? I can't. X rays next Thursday for diagnosis. He is very pretty and as sweet natured as they come. Here is a picture of him.

Mike, he sure looks good in that picture. Don't jump to any conclusions until you find out what's really wrong. You never know, he could make the perfect dog even with some health issues. His condition (whatever it is) could also turn around with the help of a proper diet or possibly just keeping fit etc.
One of our old GSD's was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. They said he would become violent from the pain and would need to be destroyed. Ya, well that dog lived to be 13 or 14 years old. Maybe 3 or 4 times in his entire life we noticed he was in pain. He was the best, sweetest GSD we ever had (unless somebody tried to get to our kids). An amazing and freakishly huge GSD...

do you guys think the really huge gsd's have a higher hip dysplagia rate ?
gibbit1
25th of July 2009 (Sat), 07:13
Mike:
Don't despair just yet. He probably didn't get enough exercise in the kennel, so his muscles may have atrophied. Even if he does have hip dysplasia, there's an injectable form of glucosamine called Adequan, which can be directly applied to the hips. That plus a regular 500mg glucosamine pill each day can do wonders. My 10-year old female has had dysplasia since she was a puppy, and you'd never know it. She also has arthritis, but with a combination of Rimadyl, glucosamine and mild pain medication she's able to run our puppy to exhaustion. Please let us know how things work out.

Mike, what's up with the respiratory issue? He looks good in this picture too. Nice white teeth, they are all there and straight. His ears look good too. Standing nice and they look really clean. Lots of GSD's have inner ear issues... His rear end looks a bit thin but that's how most of ours always were until about 18 months when they really filled in.
Have you ever been to German Shepherds.com (http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum/ubbthreads.php)? The forum there is pretty nice.

Hi John, thanks again for your interest. The respiratory bit is just nasal discharge (snot blotches all over my trousers where he nudges me) with occasional sneezing, the running nose has pretty much stopped now. In a human I guess we would classify it as a cold, probably caught in the dog pound or kennel. Nothing to worry about but the vet would rather wait for another week for the GA. Off to look at that web site now.

This was the last GSD I had, Duke he passed away in 2000 very suddenly after playing in the garden he had a massive heart attack. He was a very nervous dog and easily spooked but he was adorable.
His best friend Buster was the retriever cross they were inseparable, both dogs were the same age, we got them a week apart so they grew up together.

Some of you guys asked me to report back when our rescue pup had been X rayed. Results are as I feared, both hips are bad with the right one so bad it is virtually dislocated. They reckon that he is about 10 months old and by the time he is 3 he will be a cripple. The X rays are being sent to a specialist to see, and I quote, "if anything can be done." Just have to wait for an appointment with the specialist and see what he says. He is a lovely lovely dog and we will back him all the way.

Well, I agree with Jon. That sucks. But I still wouldn't give up hope. When our vet saw the x-rays for our first shepard, he thought that the thigh bone was so square and the hip so shallow that he shouldn't even be able to walk. With the drugs and exercise, he lived a normal life and never had a problem. I hope everything works out.

For the first time since Feb-98, my home is not graced by the presence of a German Shepherd. My little man above was put to sleep Friday afternoon. Last Saturday he was very weak. We had to leave him with the vet for the weekend, and he came home Monday. He had blood in his abdomen. Something, likely a tumor, was bleeding. He was somewhat himself Monday-Wednesday, but by Thursday I could tell he was weaker and hassling more. I had wondered all week how much more time I had and if the Friday follow-up would be the end. I woke up at 4:00am Friday, and I could tell he was much worse than Thursday. As feared, the follow-up appointment ended up being our final time with him. I feel like I have been slapped in the face, and I am still stuck in a stupor.
It seems like every spot in the house was his spot. I stepped over him every time I got up and walked somewhere. And I couldn't keep my hands off of him. I'll never forget his glaring look when I'd wake him up when I would step over him. I'd bend down and kiss on him, and he'd just melt. He was the sweetest thing and a brat all rolled into one. Of the four GSDs I have had since '98, none had the personality that he did.

Thanks guys.
Mike, my boy had realy bad hips. For the last 4-5 years, 60 then progressing to 100% of the time he ran fast, he hopped with his rear legs together. Walking and trotting looked normal. For the last year or so, when he'd walk by, I could hear his hips popping. But he was in good spirits and never cried. He could be a big baby at times. I really think had he been in pain, we'd known it. We saw signs so long ago that the hips were bad, but he made it this long, and it was not his hips that were his downfall.
I had been monitoring this thread about your puppy. I hope he can enjoy the good life with you for a very long time.

Feeba with my new GSD (Kobi by the way) I found many of my action shots were blurred and I blamed the follow focus of the camera but got a much higher hit rate when I upped the ISO to 800 even in good light so I could set a much higher shutter speed than I thought would be necessary. When I started this thread I had no idea there would be so many GSD pictures posted. Keep them coming. There's a reason these are the number one utility dogs in the world.

Hehee, look what I found:

You can definately understand who's the boss here...
And I had a little photoshoot today. My dog is CRAZY about fruits & vegetables, I think it's because she's allergic to beef. So I took an apple so that I could have her full attention. Unfortunately she doesn't feel quite comfortable in front of a camera so she looked a bit shy and I didn't have her attention. Next I tried to fetch her some apple pieces. Now she moved too fast and my right hand which was for holding the camera and taking pictures, couldn't react that fast to move the camera a bit downwards as Orella moved:

Oh you can see the slobber splashing :D
After that I decided to give her the whole apple. At first she didn't know what to do as she saw I had taken some bites from it ( I was hungry :D) and wasn't sure if she was allowed to eat it. I had to encourage her the whole time to make her eat it, usually there's no doubt she'd bolt it down. At last she realized I gave the apple to her and started enjoying it:

Ahhh that juicy apple..
By the time she got that apple, her slobber was all over the place, on her paws, coat ... everywhere!
