This shot of Zeus was only taken the day before the shot posted earlier. He looks very haughty / proud in this shot (in my opinion anyhow). He absolutely loves the sun/warmth. Poor pooch never enjoys winter...to the extent that we get winter down here :)
I love his colors. They are supposed to be proud and haughty, too. And sweethearts when the cameras are turned off. :)

As you asked to be kept up to date on my rescue dog Jon, the report from the specialist which I have just received says the best way forward is to build up muscle mass with controlled exercise and hydrotherapy plus the usual medication regime then when he is full grown (in a year or twos time) to have bi lateral hip replacement. £4,500 per hip! Well so be it, that is what we will do.

Well the first part sounds good but that last part sounds painful in the pocket! I don't know if the UK is the same as the states but we have stem cell therapy available for animals. Would something like that be worth investigating?
A GSD that trained with us a couple of years ago developed what they thought was arthritis. They did all kinds of work on him, exploratory surgery (a few weeks ago) and came up with nothing. So a specialist wanted to give the dog stem cell therapy to see if it would help. I was amazed to see the dog chasing a frisbee yesterday without any trouble.
Our youngest GSD isn't looking too good either. We're sure something is up with her. She keeps going through week long spells where she can't walk and holds her legs up high so they won't touch the ground. It changes from leg to leg without any warning...

A guy I know recently had that with a puppy close to a year old. The vet finally reached the conclusion it was caused by the high-protein puppy food. Once it was put on something else (regular Purina I think), it has been fine.

We're trying different foods right now in hopes it's something like that too. But it takes a while to figure out if a certain food is doing it. I think my wife picked up a new bag last night.

Well Jon I hope yours proves to be nothing serious. Mine has suddenly developed great lameness in the worst leg (rear right) and can't put any weight on it and the rear left hardly copes which seems to make him lame on the front left. He just about makes it out of the door for necessary visits. Down to the vet again tomorrow to see what has happened, I wonder if he has dislocated the right rear completely now and if so what can be done about it for the immediate term.

Keep us posted Mike.
Jon.
I do not want to hog this thread but to quickly update it seems that the likely thing is he has just over done it and set up an acute inflammation. Vet has put him on anti inflammatory tablets and there is an improvement this morning. It seems a very delicate balance between enough exercise to build up the muscles and over doing it. He has so much pent up energy! The more muscle the less likely certain complications when we eventually get as far as hip replacement.

That's good news Mike. Now you can work on training him to sit pretty so you can take more pictures of him. You know, his "mandatory" down time when he's starting to over do it. :)

Here are some pictures of my 'ol Nali. She was a rescue at a year and a half by a young family that obviously didn't have enough time for her. She was turning into a great dog when she was taken from me on my 21st birthday. I absolutely love shepherds and will have another one when I move out of the city and have a yard. There are some GREAT pictures in here! Makes me want a dog BAD! I have had dogs my whole life and worked at a B&B that had 4 GSDs at one point. They are really smart and I learned just as much about myself as I did about dogs in the two years I had her.

Well I tried to get something out of her :D
The background was a freshly stacked woodpile but I don't know if it's my kit lens or me: expecting too much of it but I remember the pile definately was not THAT yellow. Plus the sharpness needed a bit of photoshop. So I sharpened them both a bit, tried to remove the extra light. Sry I'm new to this :D Well the second one came out pretty good I think but the first one had this extra yellow woodpile. I tried to correct the levels, after that I tried to desaturate the pile but it felt weird so I changed it back. In general I like the second one better but the first one is where she posed.. Ok she didn't pose, I asked her ''Who's coming?'' and that caught her attention. Naughty tricks I have.. but it has these super bright and unnatural colours. Ok enough of the chit-chat, here are the pics:

Thanks lol. I personally think we could do better because I asked her to sit but she's not very familiar with the phrase 'stay' so I got to take 2 shots and after that she ran off. I think she's afraid of me when I have the camera :P I'll try to get a shot where she's playing with her friend, that way she won't notice me and I might get some better images.

Took a little walk. Decided to check a dam probably made by beavers. I didn't really get to the dam because there was a nasty brush right in front of it. I heard some duck(s) quacking when my dog rushed down there though. So I ran on the bridge and tried to get a shot there but they passed me. I saw them stopping some meters from me so I left the bridge and went to see if I could have a snap at the riverbank. Usually it's preeeetty steep but I found this really nice and low spot where my dog could cool herself down. So I called her and woah, I've seen her wanting to go for a swim or a cooldown but it's always too steep for her to get in but as soon as she saw what I discovered she went and.. well, check these out:

Once upon a time, in an enchanted world called LIVING ROOM, a noble young knight named REMY did battle with the evil, monstrous dragon named COUCH. The intrepid REMY, from the royal bloodline known as GERMAN SHEPARD, fought with honor and grace, and was destined to win. But the nefarious COUCH, born in the wicked land of BACHELOR FURNITURE, would not go down without a fight.
It was an epic battle which raged throughout the afternoon. In the end, though, REMY'S bravery won the day. Ripping the still-beating heart from the beast's chest and scattering it across LIVING ROOM, he defeated the COUCH and the land was once again safe from evil.
As he rested after his hard-fought battle, REMY'S loyal servants, OWNERS, took the carcass of the slain beast to an anointed graveyard, called THE CURB. There, the industrious elves of the forest known as GARBAGE MEN would take the evil monster away for ever.
And they lived happily ever after.;)

Oh dear. Mine has certain tendencies this way too. Ate my waterproof shoes and two camera bags and when the new bag arrived carefully (!!!) undid the wrapping for me but the bag was saved just in time. As you say brave noble hearts willing to sacrifice themselves in mortal combat against these evil foes. Oh and then to sick the bits up all over the carpet!

Well, fortunately, this was a 20-year old couch that we've been thinking about throwing out for awhile now. The only reason we kept it was because both dogs liked to sleep on it. I just hope that the curtains and chairs aren't next.

Nice...
Our last two GSD's ate an entire living room set (couch, love seat, wing back chair, coffee table and two end tables) and a oak dining room set (4x5 table and three chairs). The female also stripped the wallpaper in our kitchen from floor to ceiling twice. She would lick the bottom corners until them came away from the wall. Then she would grab the paper and pull it until she got the whole strip to peel away. And she kept pulling until it got to the ceiling... She was also the one that would dive to the bottom of our vinyl pool and bite at the liner. She eventually got a good hold on it and got a few fairly large chunks of it to the surface before it failed from the pressure of the water draining through it.
The two we have now are doing much better. Of course we now have kennels to lock them in when we are out for extended periods.

We were dirting today too:

I've had one from ~3 months to 11 months (heart problem).
One from age 3 to 12.
One from ~3 months to 10 yrs, 7 months. My boy I posted in this thread several weeks ago.
One from ~3 years to almost 5.
Last three passed away over the last 25 months, 7/07, 5/09, and 8/09. Dogless for first time since 2/98. It's an odd feeling. I fall for all dogs, but there's something about German Shepherds. Nothing compares to them. I don't know when I'll be ready for another.
The one that died in May was a rescue dog. Given her approximate age, she was supposed to be here for us when the much older boy passed away, but she left us first. She is the one that tugs at my heart the most. She'd clearly been abused, and now she had the good life, but only got to enjoy it for about a year and a half. She was so sweet despite showing signs of abuse.

Wow, 16 is pretty darn good for a large breed dog.
Jon.
I'm very grateful I had him for so long. It was tough towards the end. He started to slow down and had problems walking.
Thank you everyone for the kind words. I'm also very sorry for your loss as well. Expecially to you Miketoll. I can't imagine how someone can do that to an animal.
There is something about German Shepherds. They are loyal beyond belief and the intelligence is reflected in their eyes. It's like they can read your mind or mood. Always by your side............

Shepherds are the best. Especially when they give you that look. You know, the one where their ears are up, their head is forward, their eyes are wide, and then they cock their head just slightly to one side. It seems to say "I really like you" and "I think I'll bite you now" all at the same time. Just freaks people out when they aren't ready for it.

Baron at 5 months! He was recently diagnosed with Megaesophagus, so he's still a skinny little thing. Not sure if any of you are familiar with this congenital disease, but it's common in shepherds. Unfortunately, it's left his esophagus basically useless, so we feed him liquefied food while he stays upright. Go gravity! Anyway, here he is before bedtime. (:

I am so sorry to here this. Who breed this dog? It is so important that breeders remove animals from their breeding program that are known carriers of genetic diseases. Buyers need to do their homework and research the breeders and bloodlines before buying.

It's unfortunate that there are shady breeders out there but sometimes you just never know when something will pop up. German Shepherds are a awesome breed but like other dogs in the large or giant category, they will be prone to issues for a long time to come. Even the smaller dogs have genetic issues that will probably be there for many decades.
Also, most people (like myself) tend to feel sorry for the dogs when there are health issues. But the owners and families of the dogs are effected just as much. It's hard to have a sick animal on your hands. Especially when kids are involved. Those heart strings get stretched way way out at times making it hard to follow through with difficult decisions.
As a side note, there was a DNA study done a few years ago that was able to track the original two female wolves that all dogs are bred from. Yep, the source for every dog on the planet. Sort of the Adam and Eve of K9's. But as far as I know they never were able to find the original male. The location was also marked in China. I want to say it was northern China but that doesn't really help to nail it down...

Yes I fully understand. I am a lifetime lover of this breed and have competed in the sport of Schutzhund for years. I have gone to great lengths to acquire excellent sound, healthy working dogs. The best breeders select breeding partners with their brains and not their hearts and ruthlessly cull their breeding stock when genetic disorders surface. This is so necessary to ensure all the wonderful traits of this breed are preserved!

Thank you all. There is unfortunately no cure for the disease. Gravity is his only treatment, so we feed him upright in a little chair. We liquefy all of his food with a can of wet, a cup of water, and an egg, and he is fed three times a day. After he was diagnosed, he gained a much needed 10 pounds in 2 weeks, and has continued to gain since then, so his future is promising. (: I don't know who bred him, as I picked him up from someone who was giving away free puppies, and he was the runt. It was a poorer area of town, and most of the other puppies were being taken by "shady people", so I decided to give him a good home, and lucky enough for him, because I think otherwise he would of ended up starving to death in some backyard. It is hard sometimes, he has bad days, but 95% of them are good. (: The vet said that we may end up having to put him down, because Megaesophagus isn't really what harms them, it's the aspiration pneumonia that can result from breathing back in food particles if he were to vomit and breathe at the same time. He has recovered from one bout of pneumonia already, so we have to keep a close eye on his breathing. I will continue posting as he grows! (:

I remember seeing a news story about this awhile back, they interviewed a gentleman whose dog had this and he developed and was trying to market a feeding chair, maybe it's the one you use.
Sorry to hear about your dog but it sounds like he has a wonderful new home. What kind of training was involved in getting him comfortable with the chair? Good luck with him and let's see some more pics of the little guy.

A family has marketed the chair, not sure if it's the same one you are talking about, but it's called the Bailey Chair, named after their shepherd mix Bailey. (:
Ever since I got him at 5 weeks I've introduced him to anything and everything possible; people, other dogs, riding in the car, riding on the boat, swimming in the pool, swimming at the lake, sights, sounds, you name it, so getting him used to the chair wasn't hard at all. It took him one time to learn that he gets fed there and finally feels full for once. (: He's a very sweet, mellow dog even for 5 months old!

Since we obviously have so many GSD owners here let me ask you a question. Can your dogs spell? I swear Zeus can. He knows all the commands he's been taught and knows a lot of words. His vocabulary has expanded to the point that we have been spelling words in our conversations so he doesn't hear a "key" word and then act on it. For example, you can't say the word out in a sentence. If you do, he gets all excited and heads for the back door and rings the bell until you let him out. So we've been spelling words out to keep him clueless. Ok, that worked for a while but now if he hears us talking and we spell the word out in the context of actually letting him or Isis out to do their business or play he jumps up and heads for the back door... And it's not just the word out. It's all sorts of stuff. He either knows how to spell or he can read our friggin thoughts. We've also been trying to spell words backwards. That worked for a few weeks but now he's on to that as well.
Anyone?
Jon.

I'd suspect that it's the inflection and tempo of your voice that gets him, not the actual letters. Try this: spell out a different word that has nothing to do with going out, but use the same inflection and tone that you use when spelling "out" or whatever. If he reacts the same way, you know he's just keying on your voice, not the words. Just a thought.

We've tried that and some times it will get him to react. But more often than not he'll do the GSD head tilt and look at you until he figures out what you mean.
Now our newest GSD is totally different. She's not dumb but she's no rocket scientist. ;)

Orella doesn't quite catch the words in a sentence, unless you say them out really loud and emphatically. Although she knows such 'words' as ''let's go'', ''outside'', ''who's coming'', or just whispering. It really catches her attention and for the phrases ''who's coming'' or ''mom's coming'' and she often runs to the window and sprays it with her slobber as she starts barking. Though there's one command she ALWAYS runs to accomplish - it's ''find mom''. Haha, I usually ask her that when I come home and can't be bothered to walk through the whole garden so I tell Orella to find her and she does it perfectly!
I can't find the user who talked about his/her dog running away as the camera appears.
My dog used to do it too, she just ignored me and gazed behind her, just to keep her face away from the camera. I usually have some cookies in my pocket so I will have her full attention. Try it out, I believe your dog will want to sit in front of the camera for hours when you have something extra good for him/her :P

Nice shots Maggedy. The long haired GSD's are commonly referred to as Open Coats. Some litters have them and some don't. In the south eastern part of Michigan open coats generally sell for several hundred dollars more. I honestly have no idea why but that's just how it is around here. Our male, Zeus came from a short haired all black male. His mother was a more common sable colored GSD but she was a open coat. From the litter Zeus came out of there was only one open coat. The rest were the more common short hair.

Post #350 on page 24 of this thread shows my Marky. He was a prancer. He pranced all the time. A plain walk or run was hard to come by!
He was definitely more excitable than my females ever were. (though in a twist of irony, the boy that was a show-off always let the girls handle the guard dog duties while he sat back and watched.)
He also spoke through expression about 100x more than the females. He was the most spoiled of the bunch, and he was also the biggest affection sponge of the group. The females didn't care to "smooch" for long, but he'd sit or lay there and let you brush him, hold him, kiss on him for hours. As most of us treat our dogs like real kids, he was clearly the closest in behavior to having a real kid.
An illness developed suddenly in early August and we lost him. He was 10 yrs 7 mos old.
The girls were standard coats.
Marky's hair was always long, but the color and texture went through about 3 phases. I wish I had been into photography back when he was a puppy. Photos of his early years are not as numerous as the last several years.
The hair I remember the most was the spell where on the top of his back from right at or above the shoulder blades was the blackest, shiniest, and coarsest hair. It seemed as if it was just a tad longer, it could have been braided. It was really curly right there on top. Then after a while, the texture seemed to be more like the lighter hair, and the coarseness and length seemed to even out with the surrounding hair, too.

All these gorgeous dogs compel me to give a quick update on my rescue dog Kobi. He has put on 6-7 kilo weight and grown by about 1", his hips continue to occasionally really bother him but he is full of energy and enjoying life. Here is a shot of him helping with the gardening.

Marky was stunning, absolutely stunning, and yes, my Maggie is more excitable than any of my other shepherds have been (she's number 5 for me). I've heard anecdotes that the coaties are both higher energy and more affectionate than the non-coateds, and she's certainly bearing that out to be true. None of that "aloof I love you from afar" business I had from my other furkids. She is a big bundle of overflowing love in constant motion. Kind of a lot to take sometimes, but I wouldn't trade her for anything. Beautiful shots of Marky as well. I gather he is no longer with you, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Ok all you GSD people. What is a good toy for you dog? Ive tried everything but my guy is a SERIOUS CHEWER. Even the 'indestructible' toys get destructed in a matter of days (and sometimes hours!). Any good recommendations? The only things Ive found so far are Cuz toys (though he does break the squeaker in them) and Nylabone things (though he even chews those down to little stumps...)

Adam,
My best suggestions would be Rawhides, Is the dog alone or in its crate allot? It may be pent up energy or anxiety. im not sure. I know young GSD's require allot of attention and energy, there very social animals...

The Bully sticks are popular but extremely expensive. Roughly $10.00 a foot. Our dogs can eat a one footer in 10 to 15 minutes. Pricey. The cheap tennis balls are their second favorite. We buy them in bulk bags for a few bucks and they get one ball each every few days. They love to play with them but Zeus enjoys popping them the most. It takes him 3 or 4 good hard bites and they pop. Our dogs don't eat them either. I know lots of dogs will shred them and eat them. When ours get shredded or torn in half they go into the trash. At any given time you'll find 30 or 40 + balls in the house or backyard.

You could also try kongs. They're kind of cone-shaped hard rubber toys with a hole in the bottom where you can put treats. Put a few treats in there and they'll be entertained for hours. Not expensive, either.

That is a wonderful composition. I know I am VERY biased toward the breed, but only a GSD can "say" so much without even looking in your direction.

A second vote here for the Kong. The black version is more durable than red.
