Yeah, Mike. I understand the feeling, too. I had to put my 13-year old pup Murray down last year. I still miss him. We got a GSD pup about a year ago and named him.......Remy! Here's a pic. Maybe it'll cheer you up just a bit.
What a cutie! Definitely made me laugh a bit. Nice name ;)

Mike, my deepest condolences. :/
We've had to put two dogs down. One of them was dad's. The only time I've ever seen my dad cry is
when he realized that it was time for "Captain" to go. We knew it was coming because he had been
struggling for about 2 years already, but every time we thought "this is it," he would pull right
through. In the end, they kind of give you that look that says "it's okay, it's my time." Afterwards the
loss is hard, but time heals. You'll have plenty memories to cherish now. (:

This has undoubtedly been the hardest 48 hours of my life. Granted I have never lost a direct family member. but holy crap, I don't know how anyone does this multiple times throughout their life. The house just isn't the same - he was there when we moved in ten years ago and he has never not been there in some form or another.
Sorry for bringing the thread down, I just need to get it off my chest. Empty bowls, toys, the spots where he layed every night with the carpet all worn down..just too much.
He was a gsd/collie...shepherds are really wonderful dogs, every one i've met.
I don't know. I don't think you can get over it like when your car dies or a pet fish dies. There is definitely a bond/connection there. Especially when you've spent so many years with them.
I don't think I get as attached to our dogs like I did in the past but maybe that's part of getting older. I think I see death more as a part of life now and there's no way for any of us to escape it. Regardless of how it actually works it's hard to loose a dog!
I know some people cope with it by getting another puppy right away while others can't get another dog for a long time if ever.
Jon.

The ears could go up and down during the fist 3-5 months they are usually up and stay up by 5-6 months but many are up sooner, the ears need calcium to develop.

Not very unusual, while I've seen shepherds with their ears up at 7-8 weeks and 12 weeks, once they start teething they are robed of calcium which is needed to develop the ear cartilage so extra calcium may speed up the process but too much is not good either.

That too, however some ears are a bit smaller, it seems that her puppy's ears are not the bulky dumbo type you see in most GSDs. :)

I am going to boost the calcium. Great suggestion.
In the meantime, we did tape the ears. My breeder saw the picture and was very concered about creases forming in the ear that wouldn't straighten out since he is nearly 6 months old. I will have to take a picture and post it. He looks like he has little devil horns. Thankfully the tape doesn't seem to be bothering him one bit, and it was very easy to do.
I'm hoping we only have one round of this - it would be nice if they perk right up with a little help :)

Owning shephers for more than 35yrs,I would like to make a few suggestions.
Additionally I am a Organic Grass fed farmer raising dairy cows amongust other things.
All my 6 shepherds work on the farm
There is a high end kibble designed exclusely for german shepherds. The best I came across in all 35yrs owning shepherds. http://www.bestbreed.com/
Additionally supplimented to the kibble
fresh raw milk
1 raw egg
we butcher a old cow turn everything into ground includinging organs,and bones
we do sell lots to our customers
each pup or dog gets a large scope of it into kibble as well.
once a week each gets a bone to knarwl on
Where can you find these supplimented items to add to the kibble
Go to http://www.eatwild.com/ click on your state and you will find a farm fresh farmer in your local area.
All our farm cats eat the same way

Gadget Guy, I think you exceeded the Cuteness Limit for this thread. :lol: bw!
Are his eyes blue, or is that the light being reflected?
His eyes are bright blue at the moment but will probably change at a later stage but not sure on to what colour!
Blaze is classed as a blue/tan german shepherd due to his mum and dad carrying a recessive gene which causes any black pigment to appear lighter including nose and paws and he looks as if he has had a bag of flour put over him as his coat looks dusty in the light.
Have a look at http://www.nicoleegsd.com/FAQS.htm#Blue
The above article is by the breeder we brought him from who breeds straight back working line shepherds including Blues.

I've heard of some breeders in the U.S. who sometimes breed blues and don't destroy them.
From what I've heard and researched, blues don't carry any more genetic flaws than that of
a normal black and tan. Poor things. :/
Gadget - Blaze is gorgeous. :)

I saw pictures of blue new born GSD before it was destroyed. It looked really cool. The rest of the pups had traditional colors. I've also seen a fairly high number of adult GSD's that show a blue tint in their black hair under direct sun light. It makes me wonder...

But blue and white are not acceptable colors, and neither is a long coat according to the standard for the breed. Any respectable working dog kennel is NOT breeding for any of these traits.
GERMAN SHEPHERD
F.C.I.-Standard-Mo. 166/23.03.1991/D
Edition 1993
Short Historical Overview
In accordance with the official provisions of the German Shepherd Dog Club (SV) e.V., located in Augsburg, a member of the Federation of Dog Clubs in Germany (VDH) is the founding organization of the German Shepherd Dog and therefore, responsible for the breed standard. Work on this document was begun at the first membership meeting in Frankfurt/M on September 20, 1899 and is based on proposals by A. Meyer and v. Stephanitz. Additions and revisions to the standard were made as follows: membership meeting on July 28, 1901; 23rd membership meeting on September 17, 1909 in Koln; Board and Executive Committee Meeting on September 5, 1930 in Wiesbaden, and the Breeders Committee and Board Meeting on March 25, 1961 in conjunction with the WUSV (World Union of German Shepherd Clubs) and during the WUSV Meeting on August 30, 1976 where the standard was agreed upon, revised, and approved by the Board and Executive Committee on March 23 and 24, 1991.
Planned breeding activities began after the inception of the SV in 1899. The German Shepherd Dog was developed from herding dogs in service during that time in Middle and Southern Germany. The goal was to produce a high-performance working dog. To accomplish this goal, the Breed Standard of the German Shepherd Dog was created. This document addresses both physical qualities as well as character attributes.
General Appearance
The German Shepherd Dog is medium sized, slightly longer than tall, strong and well muscled, bone is dry, the whole dog presenting a picture of firmness.
Important Measurements
Height at the withers for males: 60 - 65 cm, bitches: 55 - 60 cm. Length of torso exceeds height at the withers by 10 - 17%.
Character
The German Shepherd should appear poised, calm, self confident, absolutely at ease, and (except when agitated) good natured, but also attentive and willing to serve. He must have courage, fighting drive, and hardness in order to serve as companion, watchdog, protection dog, service dog, and herding dog.
Head
The head is wedge-shaped and in harmony with the dog’s size (length app. 40% of height at the withers) without being coarse or overly long. The head should appear dry, and moderately wide between the ears. Seen from the front and side, the forehead is only slightly domed, the center furrow is either absent or only slightly visible. The length ratio of skull to face is 50 : 50%. Skull width approximately equals skull length. Seen from above, the skull slopes into a wedge-shaped muzzle. The stop should not be pronounced. Upper and lower jaws are strong, the bridge of the nose should be straight, not a Roman nose or dish-faced nose. Lips are taut, well closed and of dark color.
The Nose
The nose should be black.
Teeth
The teeth must be strong and complete in number (42 teeth as per formula). The German Shepherd has a scissor bite, where the upper incisors must meet the lower incisors in a scissor grip. Level bite, overshot and undershot teeth are faulty, as well as widely spaced teeth. A straight incisor tooth line is also faulty. Jawbones must be well developed, to permit deep rooting of the teeth in the gum.
The Eyes
The eyes are medium sized, almond-shaped, set slightly oblique and not protruding. The color should be as dark as possible
.
Ears
The German Shepherd has medium-sized, upright ears which are carried erect and perpendicular to one another, pointed and open to the front. Tipped ears and hanging ears are faulty. Laid-back ears are not faulty when the dog is in motion or resting.
Neck
The neck is strong, well-muscled, and clean cut (without folds of loose skin). The angle of neck to torso is approximately 45 degrees.
Body
The top line extends from the point where the neck meets the skull past the well developed withers and the gently downward sloping back to the slightly sloping croup without a visible break. The back is firm, strong, and well muscled. The loin is broad, well developed, and strongly muscled. The croup should be long and have a slight downward slope (approximately 23 degrees from horizontal) and should merge smoothly into the tail set.
Chest
The chest should be of moderate width, the underchest long and pronounced. Chest depth should be approximately 45 to 48% of height at the withers. The ribs should be moderately sprung. Barrel shaped or flat ribs are faulty.
Tail
The tail reaches at least to the hock joint, but not past the halfway point of the hock itself. The coat is slightly longer on the underside of the tail. The tail hangs in a soft, saber-like curve. When the dog is excited or in motion, the tail is somewhat raised, but should not reach past the horizontal line. Surgical corrections are not permitted.
Limbs
Forelegs
Seen from all sides, the forelegs are straight and absolutely parallel when viewed from the front.
Shoulder and upper arms are of equal length. Both are held snugly to the body by strong muscles. Angulation of shoulder blade to the upper arm ideally is 90 degrees, but up to 110 degrees is permissible.
Elbows may not turn out when the dog is standing or in motion or be pinched inward. The lower legs viewed from all sides are straight and absolutely parallel, dry, and well muscled. The pastern measures about 1/3 of the forearm length and is angled 20-22 degrees to the foreleg. Pasterns with an angle of more than 22 degrees or very steep pasterns (less than 20 degrees) reduce working capability especially, endurance.
Paws
The paws are rounded, tight, and arched. The soles are hard, but not brittle. The nails are strong and dark.
Hind Legs
The rear legs have a pronounced rounded knee or turn of stifle which projects the dog's rear quarter well behind the point of the pelvis. Seen from the rear, the hind legs are parallel to one another. Upper and lower thighs are of approximately the same length and form an angle of 120 degrees. Thighs are strong and well muscled.
The hock joint is strong and dry and the hock stands upright under the joint.
Paws
The paws are tight, slightly arched, the balls of the feet are hard and dark, nails strong, arched, and dark.
Gait
The German Shepherd is a trotting dog. Length and angulation of front and rear legs must be in proper proportion to one another to permit the dog to move the rear leg underneath the body, matching the reach of the rear legs with that of the front legs and at the same time, keeping the topline over the back relatively undisturbed. Any tendency for over-angulation of the rear reduces firmness and endurance of the dog and therefore, working capability. Correct body proportions and angulation result in a ground-covering gait which moves close to the ground and conveys the impression of effortless movement. With the head held slightly forward and the tail slightly lifted, the dog trotting evenly and smoothly, we see a softly moving topline which flows without interruption from neck to tail tip.
Skin
The skin covers the body loosely, but without folds.
Coat
Coat Characteristics
The correct coat for the German Shepherd is a stock coat (outer and under coat). The top coat should be as tight as possible, straight, coarse, and clinging closely to the undercoat. The head, including the inside of the ears, the front of the legs, the paws, and toes have short hair. Neck hair is longer and thicker. On the rear side of the legs, hair length increases downward to the pastern and hock. The rear of the thighs is covered show moderate "pants".
Pigment
Black with reddish brown, brown, tan to light-grey markings. Solid black, grey with darker overcast, black saddle and mask. Inconspicuous small white chest markings, as well as lighter pigment on the inside of the legs is permitted, but not desirable. All dogs, no matter what their color, must have black noses.
Missing mask, light to white markings on the chest and inner leg sides, light toenails, and a red tail tip are signs of faulty pigmentation. Undercoat has a slight grey cast. White is not permissible.
Size/Weight
Males: Height at the wither 60 cm to 65 cm
Weight 30 kg to 40 kg.
Females: Height at the wither 55 cm to 60 cm
Weight 22 kg - 32 kg
Testicles
Visual inspection must show two normally developed testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
Faults
Any deviations from the above listed points are considered faults. Points deducted must be in accordance with severity of the deviation.
Severe Faults
Deviations from the breed characteristics described above which compromise the working ability of the animal.
Ear Faults: ears set too low, tipped ears, overset ears, and soft ears.
Considerable lack of pigment.
Firmness strongly compromised.
Faults of Dentition:
All deviation from scissor bite and number of teeth, unless they are disqualifying faults.
Disqualifying Faults
a) Character weakness, nervous biters, and dogs with a weak nervous system;
b) Dogs with documented "severe hip dysplasia";
c) Monorchids and cryptorchids as well as dogs with testicles of visibly uneven size or shrunken testicles;
d) Dogs with disfiguring ears and/or tails;
e) Malformed dogs;
f) Tooth faults as follows:
1. Missing 1 #3 premolar and one additional tooth;
2. Missing 1 canine tooth or
3. Missing 1 #4 premolar, or
4. Missing 1 molar #1 or #2 or
5. Missing a total number of 3 teeth and/or more;
g) Dogs with bite faults: overbite of 2 mm or more, or undershot; level bite;
h) Dogs that measure more than 1 cm over or under regulation size;
i) Albinism;
j) White coat (incl. those with dark eyes and nails);
k) Long stock coat (long, soft loosely fitting outer coat with undercoat, flags on ears and legs, bushy pants and bushy tail with flag on underside);
l) Long coat (long, soft outer coat without undercoat). This coat type frequently is parted along the center line of the back, has flags on ears, legs, and tail.

It doesn't matter if you're breeding for these traits or not. Instead of destroying these animals, they should be given to the local shelter, who would have no trouble finding them a home. It doesn't matter what color they are, GSD puppies won't stay in a shelter long before someone snatches them up.

Im glad that my breeder does not follow this sort of behaviour as a GSD no matter if its Blue,White or any other colour is still a remarkable living animal and i am so glad that quite a few of us are not as narrow minded regarding the so called breed standard set out by the kennel club although they are still more than willing to accept my payment for his pedigree registration.
The breeder that i got Blaze from has a long family history of breeding the straight backed,long haired GSD and breeds for Health and Temperament above anything else and carries out all relevant health test's including Hip and Elbow scoring, Haemophilia testing,Eye testing and DNA Profiling.
I wont get in to a major row over this as it makes my blood boil as my dog is a part of my family and not some sort of fashion accessory that must look a certain way or colour so i will end this with a quote from the breed founder of the GSD.
"No good dog is a bad color" -- Max von Stephanitz
(breed founder of the German Shepherd Dog)
I think you will find that the breed standard now set out by the Kennel Club is way off what the original idea was set out to be and i am sure that Max Von Stephanitz would be ashamed at any healthy GSD being destroyed for any reason regarding its coat length or colour.

Agreed Gadget-Guy, the arbitrary standards set by certain breeders and their affiliates can be down right scary. Unfortunate the amount of harm that people that think like that have had.

I do believe the puppies that are not breeding quality should be neutered and placed in pet homes. What is disturbing are those people who call themselves breeders who actually are breeding and perpetuating disqualifying faults or weak temperament. If it were not for the judicious breeding of several countries who breed to the SV standard we would not have any GSD capable of the work they were originally breed to do. If there is no breed standard you might as well be breeding mutts. A standard is what defines a specific breed. All responsible breeders are happy to neuter and place pet quality dogs in a nice home. Breeding indiscriminately however, does a real disservice to the breed. I have loved this breed and have had the pleasure to own some fantastic working GSD. I have competed in working trials with this breed for a very long time. I am thankful that there are breeders who are breeding to the SV standard and producing excellent sound dogs in both mind and body capable of being the great working dogs the founders of this breed envisioned. I do not believe the pet quality pups should be destroyed. They should be neutered and placed in a loving home.

I totally agree the AKC breed clubs clearly leave lots to be desired. The WDA arm is attempting to promote the German standard and breeding practices but the are still part of the GSDA. There are still countries that follow the German Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV)" breeding practices. The United Schutzhund Clubs of America Inc. is the main organization in the USA that is strongly devoted to create and promote the German Shepherd Dog in its original breeding as a working dog.

I think that many dogs in the USA are far closer and better exzamples of the true breeds due to how strictly the breed standards are followed including the German Shepherd and many other breeds but i do not agree with any animal that is healthy being destroyed due to the so called standards.
Here in the UK out of a litter of 9 pups 4 black/tan and 5 blue/tan i purchased a blue/tan and signed a contract with the breeder that i would not breed or export my dog so as to maintain the breed standard as i had no intention of having my boy for anything else than a pet and had full knowledge that i would never be able to show him.
So lets get back to the photo's and all agree that we are lucky to have such inteligent and wonderful companions in our lives.

Phil, those are great photos! Does anyone in this thread have a male/female pair where the female is NOT Alpha? My two girls used to beat down my boy. He knew his place! When my first girl got old enough that he clearly was stronger, he'd still fall over at her minor slapping and let her be boss. It was funny and sweet all rolled into one.

Excellent shots Phil.
BV1DMKIIn, I'm the alpha then it's Zeus (our male), then I think my wife. The kids fall in with Isis (our female). But, when Zeus is being Zeus, Isis will attack him and drag him down. But I think he lets her do it. He's an odd one. In return he'll knock her down with his legs and give her a bite here or there to keep her submissive. When he's pissed, he'll slam her to the ground so hard I think she'll never get up again.
I think I posted this one already. Zeus is holding Isis down with one foot...

The loss of jobs is very common around here too. Tell him to stay positive. Most of the people we know who lost their jobs are still looking. But things do seem to be getting better. Just hold on. What kind of work is he in? Has he joined LinkedIn yet?
Nice pictures too!
Jon.
Thanks, Jon. He's in IT and it seems the jobs have dried up here in Memphis. We are actually looking to make a move, possibly this month. We may head to Austin and hope for good luck because we both love it so - and it's looking more and more like we won't be able to hold on to our house anyway :(. We're both on LinkedIn.
In the meantime, I just keep taking pictures because that makes me happy :)
To keep this a picture thread, here's another of the boy. He looks so goofy with the tape in his ears, but his eyes look so intelligent in this picture (at least to me).

silly question, why are his ears tape together and on top? To get them to stand up?
TheMaggedy

Yes, he had gotten to 6 months old with his ears still flopping over, and the cartilege was starting to crease. Many people who have shepherds (including my vet) say if the ears aren't up by six months, you have to help them up. The 10 days of tape did the trick. They are standing up great now.

Here are Pike and Maggie from earlier today being utter goofballs. Taken with the 200 2.8. Pike likes to think he's the boss but notice he does not have the Airdog even once.

ahh ok yeah my gsd ears came up at 8 1/2 weeks she 12 weeks now and they stand straight up I'll post a picture tomorrow but we got her at 5 /12 weeks and gave her milk twice a day till 11 weeks old. My vet said the calcium made her ears stand up and also helps her bones. I love your long hair gsd's such a pretty coloring too.

Wow, Pike is getting BIG.
It appears that he's just a BIT shy of Maggie's size!

Pike is pretty large! He is definitely giving Maggie a run for her money these days. Hey, haileylommen I see you have the Sigma 10-20mm. How do you like it? I got a bad copy of the lens and I need to send it in. I'm actually going to do that today. I'm hoping once Sigma looks at it, I'll love it.

How much does he weigh at 6 months? He's a monster. haha
I love the Sigma 10-20mm, unfortunately I don't have many opportunities where I need to use it. I did take it on a camping trip though in Colorado, and it was all I used. It proved to be worth holding onto. (: The only flaw I would say is that I wish it had a lower aperture, but other than that it's a good lens IMO!

Here are some from Pike's first day at dog park. It was so hot it was just us. He's also running on hot over-saturated grass. I need to fix that.
That gunk in his ear is left over his adhesive from the ear taping. I can't wait for his fur to grow back in!

TheMaggedy, Pike's so adorable!
Did you have to shave his ears for the tape to stick better?

Thank you. Yes we had to cut off all the fur for the taping. He had a big "halo" up there. I hope it comes back.

Yeah, I've heard "fear stories" of people telling me not to shave a GSD b/c their fur will never grow back, but I'm sure Pike's ears will grow out just fine. :) He's still quite young and long-haired GSDs don't finish growing out their coats until they are 1-2 years, is that right?

Beautiful dog! Mine loves soccer balls as well, but I never even thought to get him a mini one.. he manages to barely pick up the regular size though. I'll have to get him one of those little ones. (:

Yeah this ball is a size 1 football. He loves it but sometimes gets it a little stuck in his mouth. He can get it out himself though eventually. It's a better size than a regular size 4/5 for a dog.
