OHHHH... you guys are killing me- i had two German shepherds when i was younger, about nine or ten; MAX and Fritz (lol classic name for a German shepherd) but Fritz was older and had to be put down and we had t give MAX away because he kept chasing the neighbors sheep... caught a few but didn't kill any thankfully. Amazing pics guys, really miss them now- I love German Shepherds above all other dogs lol

Shepherds are without peer when measured by the standard of smartest breed in existence.
Personally, though, I can't own one because my wife is highly allergic.
I do love them though.

Mark, nice dog. I like the white/gray hair on the back and around the mouth. It shows the wisdom of age...
My wife is allergic to cat and dog hair too but somehow she has managed to be around them most of her life. She was having second thoughts with our newest pup about a week ago but I think it's getting better.

Here are mine. The first is of our very first GSD, Hugo (old scanned photo sorry!). he had a bowel disorder and we lost him at 18 months - a very sad loss even after such a short time.
The second pic is of our current GSD Simba. He is 9 years old now and a big baby - he just lurves his cuddles!

Poah, that picture with the little boy on the Nero's back takes the cake! That is probably the main reason we always had at least two GSD's around our babies at all times. The abuse they put up with from the little kids was nothing short of amazing. And they would stay by them no matter what. Day or night, protecting them to the end...
Here's an old film scan of our oldest when he was around 2 years old.

Amen brotha.
Quick little story. My uncle had a K-9 when he worked for the police force in S. Florida named Mep. I was probably 6-7, dog was old and at the kitchen table while he was eating. I layed my hand on Mep's back and he turned on me. He bit the top of my head, teeth around my neck. 52 stitches later I came to with a Dr. sitting on my chest stitching up my neck. I am pushing 40 and still have the scars.
Another quick one. I was delivering news papers at age 15. Coldisac (sp) I had a customer who owned a male/white shepard named Adolf.(huge shepard) That dog waited for me every day, and not in the same spot. He would wait up the street, under cars, behind bushes. He would jump out at me and chase me nearly every day. He made a game of it.
With all that, to this day I love the breed. Some of the most intelligent dogs I have ever known. I had a mixed shepard breed for 15 yrs, truly my best friend for those years. She passed and I got Mia. The most personality I have ever seen in a dog. She is the happiest dog.

Bit of a cheat this - it's a mobile phone pic as I only got my digital a couple of weeks before he died last autumn. So this is his favourite "Get out of my face" look. He was a rescue dog, so not sure of his age, probably around 12 in this pic taken Dec 2005. I guess I could edit it, but it so sums him up. kpj

LOVE all those German Shepherds!! Here is Skylar, a long-haired GSD, we got him at a German Shepherd Rescue place in LA. They thought he was three, but we found out later he was more like 18 months! He had behavior we thought was aggressive, turned out he was being a puppy! We have had him a little over a year now, and he is such a pain in the neck!! But we love him, and he is FULL of character, energy, and lots of love!! He is running on air!! I am thinking of entering this photo in the local county fair, what do u think??

Amen Brotha! Our Mia is full of piss and vinegar. She has the most personality of any dog I think I have ever owned. She is 3 yrs old in July and acts the same as she did at 18 months. GSD's are a lot more spazzy than I thought they would be. They are family oriented dogs, protective, loving, but DEMAND attention. I wouldn't trade ours for anything, even though she can be a pain in the neck :D
Jon Foster
29th of March 2007 (Thu), 21:07
Zeus, our current GSD is a major pain in the butt. I've had many GSD's in my life and he is by far the worst. But, he's a GSD. They are all like this... And yes, they are very family oriented animals. They would die in the blink of an eye to protect our kids. GSD's hold the 3rd position for most desired dog breed in America. They are also the leading "working line" breed in the world. They can do any job you give them. Zeus's mother is a seizure dog. She stays with small children and alarms adults in the area before the kids begin having seizures so they can be taken care of before they can hurt themselves during the seizure. Amazing dogs...

szuppo...what a great guy you have there! Our GSD is a rescued dog too, off the streets of LA. Rescued dogs are the best, add German Shepherd to that mix, and you cannot go wrong!!

I lost my boy "Bogart" in February. He was a retired US Customs Narcotics dog. He barely had a chance to enjoy his retirement. This picture is the first picture I took the day my 20d arrived by UPS. It's bittersweet.

this isn't my dog, but he came up to us at the beach a couple of months ago and snatched my daughter's pants off the rock right in front of me! he ran this way; he ran that way; took them into the sea... great fun!
the owner was a bit horrified but i thought it was funny.the shot is of the dog reluctantly returning the pants to me :)
i was just relieved he hadn't decided to grab my gear bag instead!

I took a series of shots of Mia running at me while trying to test a 17-40L that I am thinking about purchasing from a friend. This is the last shot in the series but I think it turned out rather well. There is some post processing here but not a lot. This lens seems to be very contrasty and captures color well.

Thanks, those were actually taken the day we had him put to sleep. It was very hard loosing him, especially at such a young age, he was such a good dog. The best dog I've ever owned!
I dont know if we will get another. It took us two years to find him, we researched the breeder, the parents, everything (he was a Schutzhund bred dog and the family had no history of HD) and he still ended up with hip dysplasia. That said, I am a bit scared to get another one again for the fear of losing them too soon. But only time will tell ;)

I hear ya. One of our males was diagnosed with HD at a fairly young age. But he lived to be about 13/14 years old. I can remember juicing him up on pain meds only twice in that time. So I don't think he was that bad off if the diagnosis was even valid. Actually the vet on Union Lake Rd. across from Arby's was the one who thought he had HD. Now we go to the vet on Cooley by the Entertainment Tonight video rental store.
Now that we have Zeus (after a couple years without dogs) I can't imagine not having a German Shepherd anymore. But Zeus is also the worst GSD we've ever had. What a crazy dog! When I head for bed he races me there to see who gets my spot on the bed. And if any TV is on in the house he's glued to it. Damn dog watches more TV than I do. And don't let him see a show with another dog in it either. If he does, he won't shut up until you turn off the TV. He'll growl at it, whine, yipe, do circles, sit in front of the TV tilting his head in strange directions and blocks everyone's view with his ears. Wait, did I say I couldn't imagine not having a GSD? Hmm...
PS. Putting him outside doesn't help either. He sits on the deck waiting for a squirrel to enter the yard or he'll watch the clouds pass overhead and go berserk when a plane or helicopter gets close. Ye-gads...

Hear are a couple of my GSD Gauge (AKA dumb dumb) a 2yr old male, he is so simple minded I love him hes always good for a laugh and weighs in at about 95lbs. In the second shot he's on a king size bed that he likes to think is all his and does not like to share. These were taken with my Canon SD600 P&S and hopefuly I can get some recent ones with my new XTI. Also every one has some beutiful GSD's thanks for sharing.

This shot is five years old, taken on vacation without any of the good gear. Other than the shadow, I've always loved this shot of Prancer (left) and Zackery in the morning sun in Grand Teton NP.
Zack's gone now, and Prancer's old, but I love how regal they look against that majestic background! And the repetition of the pointy ears always makes me laugh!
Special note: The luggage tags they're wearing have our campsite number, campground phone number, and our 800 number on them!

Jon,
Thank you! Both boys are so well behaved, that the long down wasn't the problem.
It was an elk out on the point behind them and the pre-dawn walk through chipmunk-infested woods to get to the lake from the campground!
What we don't do for a shot! But that is truly one in a million, so thank you for saying so!
