I haven't worked with my flash a lot but it appears that all flash photos are underexposed. This is true weather I use the builtin flash or an external flash. If compensation were available I would open up one stop but compensation is not available with flash.

Am I doing something wrong, missing some adjustment, or are we all stuck with underexposed flash photos?

Daylight photos without flash are a bit on the dark side but I understand that the purpose is to protect the highlights.

Thanks.

You could get a 550EX flash and control the expsure with the + or - settings. Or you could buy a Vivitar 283 and use the camera's aperture to fine tune the output of the flash.

You should read about E-TTL flash on this site.

You need to be sure that you are working within the distance constraints for your flash's Guide Number and f/stop.
The Guide Number of the flash / f stop = max useable distance, at ISO 100. At iso 200 you multiply that by 1.4 and at Iso 400 by 2.
So you can increase the amount of flash by:
1. increasing the Iso,
2. using a wider aperture, and
3. moving closer to the subject.
