Uncle Sam gave me what he owed me, and it just as quickly got promised to B&H.

100-400 L IS
500D
Bogen 3021BPro
Bogen 490 Maxi Ball Head
Off Camera Shoe Cord

What little I have left from Uncle Sam went to the local supermarket:

3 Dozen boxes Kraft Mac & Cheese
2lbs Store Brand Bologna
1 Box Little Debbie snack cakes

Photography is the only hobby where "destitute" is spelled with L's.

I did my taxes last night!!! The sad thing is, I figured them out the correct way and submited, then I figured them out as if my newborn was born on 12-31-03 instead of 1-16-04 (8 days late) and the extra money could have bought a new 10D and 420 flash.

Well, I guess she will have to settle for her picture taken with my trusty D30.

Uncle Sam gave me what he owed me, .

You mean the money you loaned him all last year?

Been so long since I didn't have to write a check, I forgot what a refund was

Anyway...enjoy your new gear, and you should consider the store-brand Mac&cheese so you can buy more L lenses :D

Heh, I went through a similar thing end of 2002 / beginning of 2003. Nicholas was born Jan 18th 2003, a week late. I wasn't heavy into all the gear back then though, so inducing labor by 12/31 to get the tax boost was not necessary   . Did you just not realize you had that opportunity?

Ian... ROFLMAO.... *half* of the Little Debbies are on the way. The other half I sent directly to Gitzo, since I know you won't share.

Ohenry... Do NOT tell my wife about this little discrepancy in the logic. Apparently she thinks it's free money, so I'm taking full advantage of this.

Arogop... From electronic filing to direct deposit was 8 days. Sweet! So I will advise you... Go to the supermarket NOW. (Oh, and get 2 boxes of Little Debbies - they seem to go fast, what with assisting others around here.)

Tamash... Ramen Noodle images don't sell, nor do store brand products. What with the all the Barenaked Ladies' fans, Kraft Dinner images sell like crazy. Go Figure. "You know, we say 'Kraft dinner' _once_ in this song, and you throw it. We say 'a million dollars' like a hundred times, and nothin'!"

CDS... Priorities? I just go alphabetically. ABCDEFGHIJKLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLM NOPQRSTUVWXYZ. So next year I'm getting a Mercedes. Unless Canon comes out with a new camera, like a "Mark II" or something.

Scottes,
Gitzo appreciated the Debs, but was wondering if you could splurge on the Family Pak next time?

Little Debbies...official snack food of Canon 10D users :?:

You are gonna rock with the 100-400. Since getting mine 2 weeks ago it has not been off the body.
Enjoy playing with the new toys.

Y'all gonna have to wait until the State refund check comes in, and then there'll be "something for everybunny." (Oooh, I kill myself.)

Bruce,

I guess you haven't heard about the Rebel-L lenses. They only come in pink and have been software-crippled to only have IS for horizontal movement but the rumors are that there is a Korean guy that has figured out how to disassemble it and paint it white. There is also a Russian guy that has managed to enable the menu that enables vertical IS but the menu does not do anything YET. The lens sells for 35% less then the regular L lenses. Here is a pic of it:

How does tax work in the USA? You receive money instead of pay, like we do here?! :? Looks like all you USA guys get tax refunds.....

Have fun with it.... 8)

Actually, the government is happy for us to *overpay*, having the use of the excess $ during the course of the year. Then when we get back what was rightfully ours (the difference) around April of the following year, we feel like we're getting something ;-)

Having said that, I owe the government this year :-(
... or is that :-) (since I didn't overpay).

And of course, it all comes back around to being able to put food on the table.

Little Debbie's food.

Anything with a shelf-life of 39 1/2 years is a must-have staple of the photographer's diet. After all, if our lenses are built to last, so should our food ;-)

Yes but that requires that you hold the camera at a 45% angle while slightly depressing the shutter and holding your breath. You can also use a STEREO (not mono) plug in the remote port and sacrifice a live chicken while chanting in swahili to get the same functionality.

I don't even see my refund...it goes to the checking account and immediately to pay off bills and stuff....and I get quite alot back....I have to sell old equipment to buy new equipment.

This year I sure thought about the mark II and an L lens though.(yes I got that much back)...but I am married with two kids so they come first... :D

scotgash,

If you are getting that much back you are really giving uncle sam a real nice interest free loan. You should consider re-doing your deductions with your employer. On the other hand, this has given me a great idea. I am changing my deductions to single with no dependents. This way I will get a refund and I can tell the wife that its free money and I am spending it on L lenses.

I only paid in about 2000 but with my income level and with two kids they give you a little extra

That's basically what I did. I always claimed 0, got married, kept 0, got a house, kept 0. So my returns kept going up and up and up, but I never minded because my paycheck stayed the same.

So now I don't notice that I'm paying too much per week - because it's always been that way - but I certainly notice when the tax return check comes in.

And thus it really is "free money" to me. But I guess that I could not overpay the gov, and keep the money in the bank, and I'd have an extra $39.41 thanks to interest. Which I'd get taxed on, so it's really only $26.62.

There was math, then New Math, now there's L Math. I like it.

Mr. UPS dropped off the stuff today, except the ballhead. So the first image here is handheld, IS, with flash since it's dark down in the basement where I now live.
