Forum members please help. I just purchased a new canon EF 24-105 F/4L lens and I can't get sharp pictures unless I use a flash. My outdoor pictures are especially soft even at aperatures above F5.6. I used the hood outdoors and took off the lens filter. I have a canon 20D camera and this is the only lens I have had any problems with. My18-55 kit lens does better. This new lens is just too expensive for this kind of problem. I understand DOF issues when shooting close subjects but that is not the problem either. Please advise before I go nuts about this issue.

a picture with the exif data would help us figure out what the problem is. My guess is that you're shooting in aperature mode and the camera is choosing a shutter speed that's too slow, so you get blur.

Like I am sure someone will say. Post a few examples and the EXIF data.

Posted at the exact sametime. I knew someone would say it. I hope there isn't a issue with your lens. I just bought it from B&H for $969. I am over in Iraq and wont even beable to take a duck shot for another couple months. It was just to good of a deal to let go. I will be keepingmy eye on this thread.

Canon EF 24-105 F/4L soft issues
What do soft tissues have to do with this lens?
Oh, soft ISSUES!
Just a little holiday humor, and a cheap way to tag onto this thread. :)

I will take some photos tomorrow and post them. All the soft ones I took I was so disappointed with them that I deleted them. Even using a tripod outside I have not gotten any quality pictures so far regardless of shutter speed I used. What size image is required for posting? thanks

Problem solved. I took the lens off the camera and reinstalled it. For some reason this must have been the problem, all my pictures are now sharp even at f/4.0. Is it possible the contacts were not made good or maybe dirty even on a brand new lens? I was terrified that I would have to send it to Canon but now I am greatly relieved.

Most likely dust or dirt/grease on a contact it never hurts to wipe them new lens or not ,pleased it's ok now .

Cool. So, how does the lens compare (now) to your other lenses?

It is as sharp as any other lens I own. I have a canon 50 f/1.4 and a tammy 28-75 and a canon 70-200 f/4L.

Ahhh, perfect, I have that Tamron too.
How does the color & contrast of the 24-105 compare to the Tammy? (and anything else you can think of for that matter! :) )

dont mean to threadcap but since i used to own the tammy 28-75 and replaced it with the 24-105L. the tammy is definitely a great lens for the buck but the 24-105L is sharper with better color and contrast.
i find i have to do less post-processing with the 24-105L than i did with the tammy. not a knock on the tammy though since it is a great lens and you can get good pictures from it.
