View Full Version : What’s up with the 10D’s availability?

Okay. I've decided that I want to buy the 10D. After reading comments on this board about Best Buys extended warranty I went there with card in hand to order a 10D. Guess what? It is no longer available. :x It did not even show up on their screen. This seems to be the deal with all the local retailers in my area and some of the online sites. Has the 10D been discontinued? Is there a new model coming out soon? I don't think that Canon would be wise to abandon this price range with the Nikon D70 coming out. Does anybody know what is going on? :?

Basic principle of economics: keeping low supply at a high demand market ensures steady high prices. As you might have noticed, there has been no price drop for 10D since shortly after launch. For a whole year. And this is not a normal market situation.

The situation that makes the price stay up is that there is no competition for the 10D. Nikon's new model may change that (or it may not), but for now, there's been no reason for Canon to drop price when they can't produce enough 10D's as it is. Nor would they need to keep supply artificially low (which would be silly given that there is no competitor for the 10D) since that would be a waste of production facilities and wouldn't serve to amortize fixed costs very quickly.

The fact is, nobody has yet sold a camera that is equal at a price near the $1500 street price of the 10D.

Ironically, the closest thing to competition for the 10D is probably Canon's Digital Rebel.

No it has not been discontinued. No new model likely until after the summer. Reason for shortage - demand has exceeded supply and some retail stores would prefer to sell you what they can get easiest.

This may be a Best Buy decision, as the 10D is really at the top of their market, and they really don't sell many lenses that would be appropriate for the 10D.

The 10D is still strong on the market, it's mostly available as pro consumer camera, so the Proshops or high end stores will have it more than the local consumer stores.
In fact Fry's electronics has taken it off of thier shelves also, But all of the local camera shops here has a few on the shelves and Canon is still shipping.

I don't have a problem with the price. Like I said. I had my card in hand and went to the Best Buy store with the intent on ordering a 10D. It did not even show up on their list of cameras available for order. The 1Ds was there along with all the other Canon cameras. No 10D. I had the same experience in December when I asked a salesman at Kits Camera about the 10D. I was told they would not get any until February.

Now I know the 10D is a great camera at a great price. (that's why I want one) I don't see why Best Buy would not be able to allow me to order a camera from them if they were able to obtain said camera unless they are no longer available. I did not expect them to have one in stock. But I thought for sure that they would be able to order one.

I know I can probably order one online from B&H or other retailers (I may have to) but I like the idea of being able to return it locally if I have any problems with the camera.

I second that - Go For It!!

I got mine by luck when B&H happened to have them in stock for one day. I suspect they'll be gone again within a day or two.

Good choices. I don't have the 28-135 but it is very well liked. I do have the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and I am very happy with it. B&H will probably have it to you pretty quickly.

Congratulations! 8)

Please let us know how you like your new toy! :D

They can order a 10d at any Best Buy, I did it myself last week. I can't comment if it has been discontuined, because they would fire-me. They can even order a 1ds if you wanted too.

You just have to ask for the Supervisor of the Department and tell him to trasfer the camera from one of the concept stores up in the North East.

It is all about who you talk too!! If they want the sell, they can find one for you. Make sure you talk to the DI supervisor!! That is the key to the 10D :D :)

Where are you located :?: :?:

The 10D has NOT been discontinued. Part of the problem was the ramp up of the assembly lines to produce the 1DMKII. This always happens when a new camera comes out. Not to mention that the stocks were naturally depleted at Christmas. The 10D will not be replaced until Fall.

I concur, at least WRT the fact that the 10D is not discontinued - they're shipping them as fast as they can make them. In my instance, B&H happened to have some in stock on 1/15/04 (and gone on 1/16). I ordered one on that day. It invoiced and shipped out on 1/16/04. Got it on 1/18/04. It already had the newest firmware, 2.0.1. Check the date on that update at Canon's web site. These things are flying off the line.
