Merry Christmas Eve =)

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here. When I zoom in with PS, it's very granie.

Shot at 100ISO, 1/20sec at f/22 70mm

Thanks!

your dof is wrong, can't have a 100 iso at those conditions..especially with f22

What should I have shot this at? Something like:

70mm f/11 ISO100 for 1/60? or 1/80sec?

I was under the impression I want to shoot at 100 ISO as much as possible, thus I slapped together the tripod, and when for it. I sort of got what I was looking for, cept when I zoom in it's grainy :/

Thanks Broncobear.

It's hard to judge by this photo, as it's compressed. If you dont mind, post a 100%crop so we can see what your talking about.

Would be happy too.

<obviously> I'm a bit of a newbie, so I want to make sure it's just me being 'a newbie' and nothing with the equipment =)

Appreciate all the help

Well I personally think it maybe diffraction. I never shoot higher than F16 with digital. Try that next time. F16 still give you plenty of DOF so don't worry about that. What lens are you using BTW?

Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM. Got it about 2 weeks ago.

II basically shoot Iso 100 for cloudless sunny day...then depending om the varying cloud 200-400...depending on lack of light I can go to 800 and for indoors I generally shoot at 800 and sometimes 1600.

My Rebel xt has a bit of noise at a 1600 but a 30D is much better.

it's hard to judge, but I probably would have tried

F9, ISO 200 (maybe 400) and play with the shutter.

Generally the only time I tend to go above F16 is when I am doing macro.

It's not to say you should or shouldn't ...same with the iso, you just do whatever is necessary to get the best DOF calculation for your shot.

And why not? If the camera metered for the bright sky, which it looks like it did, I can believe iso 100, 1/20, and f22.

The noise might be underexposed areas in such a high contrast shot.

What bright sky? Am I missing something here, cause it looks like he is under an overcast with the exception of the far off horizon. And this was at dawn so he's shot did not have the best of light.

9 times out of 10 when a shot is too granie for me I usually find it's a result of my iso being high or too low. I do agree he is probably underexposed...I meter the exposure accordingly...but for my particular taste i wouldn't have chosen a 100 iso for that environment.

ok here is a shot I did with a similar sky. I made mistakes with this one as well, if I had to do it again I would have chosen a higher iso I used 200 and should have gone to 400. I think my av is either 5.6 or 7.1...and I adjusted my shutter accordingly.

Interesting. Next time I just got to mix it up more, heck it's not like I got to pay for the film =) Thanks for the tips!
