I need more reach, this was taken at 200mm and as close as I could get to the ocean.

well even if you dont have the 100-400mm, this is still a great shot. the colors are great and because its only 200mm, you can really tell the huge size of the wave

actually you have 320mm actual focal length (35mm equivalent..)
why not get a 1.4 teleconverter?? that would give you approx 280mm or 448mm 35mm equivalent if my calculations are correct.
the teleconverters are quite a bit cheaper than a huge new lens ;)

since you work in good lighting conditions it shouldnt hurt having F4 as maximum aperture with the converter:)

since you work in good lighting conditions it shouldnt hurt having F4 as maximum aperture with the converter:)Your analogy breaks down - a 1.4x TC won't give him the capability to crop in as tightly as the 100-400 will. He'd need a 2x TC to equal that. And I agree with OP, the 100-400 (which, BTW, is about the same size as the 70-200 f/2.8) will really help. It just might not be long enough! I still love mine.

even 400 wouldn't really be enough.
but it's a great shot.

I agree. After having used 70-200, I thought 100-400 would really solve my need for reach. But no....

I've got nothing to add about lenses or reach that hasn't already been posted, just wanted to say nice shot, I think 200mm was just right, great comp and colors here.

I disagree..I think you need the 100 -400 also. I mean....yeah sure the 200 worked "ok" but come on..anytime you have "justification" to add another lens to the mix then you "NEED IT"

It's all about what makes the OP happy and satisfied. I think he'll be happy getting the 100-400, don't you think? ;)

:D:lol::D:lol::lol: . Actually 1680 mm. I wonder how much the focus and IQ would suffer?
Tareq, you should buy this and test it.;)

Not a bad looking shot, but the 100-400L would be nice :)

Since I got my 100-400, the 70-400 f/4L was sitting a lot and eventually had to sell it, Although I loved that lens.
The 100-400 has the reach without compromising image quality and the iS is nice too.
He'd love it and love you more! ;)

Nice shot. I wish I could get up to the north shore, but I am sitting at home with a broken leg. The 100-400 is a nice lens for surf photography. I like the versatility of a zoom for breaks that are close to shore. I've used it for shots like this at Sandy's:

and this:
http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/HI/060904-Sandy/9464-600c.jpg
But if the break is further out , then the 400 end is still a little short. But it is a lot cheaper than getting a 600mm (certainly not an option for me) and you can still get some nice shots that can be cropped.
It is a great lens for closer breaks like pipeline. I shot this there on a small day a few months ago. The lighting is bad so the photo is not good, but it will give you the idea of the reach at 400mm. It is not cropped.

I hope there are still some big winter days left after my leg heals up. I'm really looking forward to using the 100-400 up north.

The waves are suppose to be 12-15 until the middle of Jan, let m know when you go (to either Northshore or Sandy's), I'd ike to learn.

I'm in a full leg cast (hip to my toes) and wont be going anywhere until late February. It's my right leg so I can't drive. Actually I can't even fit in the front seat of a car. :(
After that, I'm up for getting together and swapping lenses etc. As for learning, I've been shooting for about 12 years, but I just got the 100-400 a little while ago so I've only shot surfing about 6 times. So, I'm still on the learning curve as far as that goes.

I'd agree that shot would work even better with a longer zoom. The 100-400 is definitely a good choice imho. Go for it op.....

For the record I think that's an outstanding photo. Cropped any tighter you wouldn't get the sense of the size of the wave which IMHO ... would detract from, not add to, the photo.
Really, a gorgious shot.

Hey VFTT were was those shots taken?
The first two tight shots were taken at Sandy's beach (near Koko Head). The 3rd one was taken at Sunset Beach Park at the end closer to Pipeline.
Sandy's is known for bodyboarding, but to the left (facing the water) there is a surf break that some locals rip on:
