For some reason I prefer the horizontal aspect. What do you guys think...??

A panorama stitch of the rocks...6 shots in vertical mode.

Thanks in advance for the comments and critique :)

I think the last pic is the only one that grabs my attention but you should have waited for the sun to be in a different angle, maybe if it was late afternoon and the sun was in your back while the sky get a more dramatic colors, the picture would have been far more interesting.
just my 0.02

I would tend to agree with the analysis of all three. In 2, is your subject the rocks or the sky? The rocks comprise approx. 25% of the capture. Also, in 1 and 2, the rocks seem to be out of focus/blurred. Could have been the size reduction, but also possibly camera movement. Were you hand-held or tripoded? Keep shooting. Re-visit the location again and again if local. The rocks in 3 look like they have great potential during one of the golden half-hours. /Dan

Thanks moshe3242 and CannedHeat for your comments.

I agree on the sunlight part. My original plan was to camp there all day and shoot from dawn to dusk. Circumstances were not in my favor as the place is literally in the middle of nowhere and with all the snow and bad road minus no survival kit I had no choice but to leave around 12pm. Also Nissan Altima is not an off-road car :(

I have to plan another trip for the early evening hours to capture the rocks in golden/red light.

All shots were on a tripod as 10F temperature made it impossible for me to hold the camera still. Photos 1 and 2 may be out of focus a tad bit. I don't have the full resolution shots at work so this could be the size reduction too.

Thanks again guys...:)

Agree with the first two commenters. Plus the pano shot is ok, but it doesn't hit me as a pano. It looks like a shot that could have been taken as a single shot with a basic wide angle lens. You know what I mean? I think a pano shot should have impact as a pano shot and leave you thinking 'wow, that is a cool way to view something that could have only been done that way'. Go back in better light and work it again. Hopefully you can get there when it is a little warmer and spend more time.

I agree there was no biggie about the pano shots that I posted. Actually the rocks are spread on both sides of the road and there were lot of angles to cover them in a pano spread. 6 inches of snow all around made me think otherwise.

The pano I did was more for learning purposes. My previous attempts have been a failure.
I came back to POTN and read the suggestions and wanted to give those a shot. Also for some reason when I stitch the pics using the software that came with Rebel the stitch is far from perfect. I can clearly see the joints in the picture. Also the picture is joined in a curve.

the above pano was done using Autostitch :)

Also the picture is joined in a curve.

I think that is because the camera is the pivot point as you rotate (the camera is mounted on the tripod). You have to have the lens be the pivot point in order to get the pano shots to come out straight. They sell funky lens tripod mounts just for that.

I know what you mean about the canon supplied auto-stitch software sucking. It does.
