Hello Everyone,

As I am sure you can tell, I am new to this board.

I have recently purchased a Canon S400 specifically for general digital picture taking. Such as the occasional picture for eBay or perhaps to email a picture to family. When I purchased this camera I was not thinking anything along the lines of being interested in digital photography itself.

Over the last week or so I have been reading about digital photography and have become very interested. I guess my question is, "Will I ever be able to obtain high quality digital photos that people feel the need to compliment by using a S400?" Or am I in a situation where if I wish to truly produce amazing photos I must purchase a more advance higher costing unit?

Any opinions would be great!

Thanks, and I have alot to read around here...

Short answer: Yes, with practice you can take some incredible pics with the s400.

Do a search for sample pics and s400 galleries. There are some s400 pics out there that will blow your mind.

It's not the camera that makes good pictures, but the photographer. (It does help though that the camera is good quality.)

Since you just bought it, I would stick with it. Learn composition, lighting, and other aspects of photography. When (and if) you want to expand, your current camera can become an excellent back up (for times you don't want to travel light.)

Thank you to the both of you.

I guess the next question is, "can anyone recommend where I can go to learn about composition, lighting, and other aspects of photography?"

Thanks in advance!

I learned film photography using Michael Langford's "35mm Handbook". It discusses composition, lighting, ISO, depth of field, many techniques, etc... Most of the concepts carry directly over to digital photography.

You might consider a digicam specific book though since you are new to this. Maybe somebody else can recommended something...
