quick releases and head assemblies

Okay- I'm starting to get more professional-like gear and the Bogen- Mangrotto monpod 679B is the first piece. I know I'm going to want a quick release head, and the 486RC2 seems to do the trick for most monopod users. Question is if I get a tripod also, like the 3061, can I use the same quick release plate on the camera?

Yep. The 488RC2 is a popular head for tripod use, but Manfrotto makes a number of other heads, of various styles, that will accept the RC2 QR plate.

Jon- is the 488 better than the 486, or just more compatible?

You were too quick for me - must have caught the post while I was correcting it. The 488RC2 is popular with tripods because it has a separate pan control, which the 486 heads don't, but you don't need separate pan controls on a monopod - just turn the whole pole. The point, anyhow, is that using an RC2 release won't limit you in head choices.

good- now I just need the extra cash for the head, and tripod. I have a quick release on my camera now, but it's for a really, really cheap tripod. I think that's coming off.

I have the 486 and work it with the monopod, it's great...I can see how the 488 is great for the tripod.

I have the 486RC2 and it works great on a tripod, too. I don't use anything on the monopod. It's attached directly to the lens collar as is.

I don't have any lenses yet that need a lens collar; 70-300 IS is the biggest I have.

hawk911. Just a thought. Do you need a ball head on a monopod? I have the 680 with the Bogen / Manfrotto 3229 Swivel Tilt Monopod Head with Quick Release and it works great. I have yet to want to put my camera in portrait mode while on the monopod and the 3229 come with the same RC2 quick release. Just a thought.

Some of us prefer a ballhead on a monopod so we can position the monopod, or the camera on the monopod, at an angle, for instance aiming down at a flower or insect or propping the monopod at an angle to the vertical in a convenient corner or crevice for added stability.

I'm not really sure what head to get, but I want quick release for obvious reasons. I may be shooting motorsports, but then need to go hand-held for other shots and I like the flexibility of the QR systems. If anyone can suggest some other setup, I'm listening.

Many monopod users will just pick up the camera, monopod and all, if they need to move it around while shooting.

I find I don't need the two degrees of movement for a monopod that a ball head provides. Manfrotto have an excellent monopod head with one degree of movement that also has a quick release plate
