I shot some Sandhill Crane shots last weekend with my D60, 100-400L and a 1.4x converter. I think that calculates to about a 896mm f/8.

It was not super sharp, I had to shoot a higher ISO, 800. The shutter speeds were also not as fast as I would have liked, but the outcome was a nice effect for the subject matter.

Check'm out at: http://www.tunstall.cc/galleries/sandhills/crw_8192.htm

If anyone has any tricks in using this combo, I would like to hear them..

I use the 100-400 alot. I have used it on occasion with the 2x extender. It becomes much more difficult to use. The viewfinder gets darker and the available shutter speeeds drop as you stated. I find that I have to dump at least half the photos when used with the 2x extender. It's one of the main reasons I bought the Sigma 500mm 4.5 EX APO HSM. It's a different world. I love the 100-400 for it's range, but for longer I'll switch lenses. I haven't tested it with the 1.4.
Here's one with the 100-400 and 2x:

Care to post some 100% crops? They look pretty decent at that size, but...

Daniel, looks good at that size.
Scott, that is impressive with the 2x. Are you using the Canon 2x?
I have tried using my Sigma 2x but they are really not to my liking.

I should have mentioned that that was the Canon 2x extender, 100-400 IS L and 10D.

Thanks for looking guys. I don't think I will be able to print much more than a 8x10 off this. Too bad too, because I like the look. I am going to try and salvage it and print it on canvas. Think I can get a decent print? I will post a full size image tonight....
