I have recently been evaluating the S30. I was unable to view any of the AVI files under W2K, with either Windows Media Player or the latest version of Quicktime. I wasn't sure whether our network gateway was preventing the Microsoft / Apple sites from downloading updated CODEC files. However, I managed to solve the problem by downloading a CODEC file and installing it - from then on, Media Player was able to play the AVI files without any problems. The file I used can be downloaded from here.

I hope this proves useful if anyone has the same problem as me. By the way - I found this forum very interesting and will no doubt be a regular visitor.

The Angel Potion codec apparently causes a problem with Windows Media Player that prevents the video part of Canon AVIs from being displayed. I uninstalled it, and all my previously invisible AVIs came to life. The advice came to me via the excellent (free) VirtualDub utility (http://www.virtualdub.org/), which also rotates all those videos that I stupidly shot in portrait format. Highly recommended.
