About the portrait of your friend: it looks a little bit out of focus. Also, when you make portraits, it's a good idea to use a shallow depth of field, so that your subject is sharp and the background is blurred - that makes the background less distracting. Use a large aperture (small f-stop number) for making portraits. I don't know what camera you have, but with SLR-type cameras, the blurring of the background effect will be much better visible than with a compact digital camera (for technical reasons...).
edit: Ah, I see you have a Powershot A30. With that one it's unfortunately harder to get the background blurred...
