Found this fellow out in the 6 Mile Cypress Slough today. He put on a show for us. He seemed agitated, and kept jumping around.

He must be a young one, no breeding plumage. No wonder he's agitated. :)

I've actually noticed that not many have turned yet here. Not sure if that's normal for this area or not (I'm new here - Only 1 year).

Bob, very nice series that depict exactly what you are talking about. Good sharpness.

Hi Bob

Love this set of the young Great Blue Heron, he is definitly showing you some attitude. I have not gotten out to Six Mile Cypress in a long while, (I think a visit is in order soon)...I do recommend you take a drive (about an hour and 15 minutes on north I-75) up to the Venice Rookery. The herons are large in number this time of year and you WILL see some newly hatched chicks as well as lots of herons. Get there early! Look below to see what I mean. Nice set! :) :)

Thanks for the replies Keith, Mitch, and Dennis.

Keith - I've been meaning to get up to the Venice Rookery several times. Sounds like a good time to go! How are the crowds there now? We are definitely "in season" here. Ding Darling looked more like Disneyworld the other day! I've driven by Venice several times on my way to Tampa, just never have stopped. Might try and wander up tomorrow or Monday.

It is actually a very small place, but plenty of birds to see. The photographers will start to grow in numbers also. Once I arrived at 6:30AM right before sunrise and the place was packed with photogrphers....have not seen the volume of photogs yet, but as we get close to Feb/Mar/April, it will pick up.....
