View Full Version : Should I lower my standards?

Like virtually everyone posting on this site, I have to work within a budget and love this hobby / profession.

My philosophy to maximize (balance) dollars spent verses having the gear to capture "my masterpiece" is as follows:

1. Purchase the highest quality low tech equipment available. Eg. big bucks for a tripod & head - 20 years from now it still will be rock solid and hold my 1000 megapixel body & 600mm f2.8L lense.

2. Glass - wait untill I can purchase high end glass because I know that will keep it for a long time. I have owned 10-12 lenses since starting this hobby in 1970. Now I have only four. All Canon, a 20-35mm f3.5-4.5 (which I probably will replace with a 17-40mm f4L), a 50mm f2.5 compact macro & life size convertor, a 28-70mm f2.8L, & a 70-200mm f2.8L with a 2x. Even though newer versoins of these lenses have been improved I'm satisfied with their perfomance.

3. High tech stuff.

A. Purchase 2nd generation, 2nd tier products as I am not willing to pay the premium for the latest & greatest only to see something better & cheaper in 6 months or a year.

B. Performance equal to or better than m EOS 1v HS. (herein lies my biggest problem.) At least $5k for a 1D MkII & enough media (IMO the first DSLR to equal my 1v). It also reportedly works well with my 2 550 EX flashes.

So how do I make it through the summer untill I can put that kind of money together? I have a 4mp point & shoot that doesn't inspire me.

I do not have any body parts for sale. (Not worth much anyway.)

Boo hoo. Poor me. Any sugestions?

As far as your lenses are concerned, the only thing worth changing is the 20-35. I wouldn't expect the newer 24-70/2.8 to be substantially better than your existing 28-70, and your 70-200 is every bit as good as the 70-200 IS.
