meeko- well done! The graffiti shot is very clean. I'm wondering how you do it.

x_tan- thanks. I'm still going through my New Mexico pix. I'm a little disappointed with the results. I'm not sure if it's me or the lens (probably me). But, at this point, I think that the 28-300 might not be the lens for landscape photography. This lens seems to have a tough time with fine detail. I will, of course, shoot plenty more before making a final decision ;-)

...thanks, but i really don't do much, I just mostly shoot f8 and adjust the iso accordingly to have my shutter speed at least match the focal length. EC +2/3, or i adjust and view my histogram. I process with DPP and adjust the sharpness slider to 7, but i'm really interested in learning how to process the images better!

...you're not planning of getting rid of the lens are you?

A prime lens will be the best for portrait and landscape.
But how many prime lens you can carry for landscape shoot during a trip without your own car?

Get a tripod, low ISO, +/- CPL filter, careful composition will make you landscape shoots 'pop' IMO.

I'm going to the Swiss Alps few weeks time. I'll get lots shoots there :D

I used my 85L + 5D2 as walk around during my holiday to Taiwan 11 months ago; sure I had many nice shoots, but I miss 90% shooting oppo; then I used 17-40L + 5D2 & 24-105L + T2i during my trip to NZ April this year, I might miss about 10 - 20% chance; And I used 28-300L + 5D2 during my Great Ocean Road trip, I might miss about 5% shoot without 17-40L + 5D2.

Got my 5D2 back last Thursday, and start to shooting again :D

I can't think that any single lens can replace my 28-300L for travelling.

24-105L + 100-400L might somewhat better than 28-300L.

Personally I have 24-105L, but I don't think it's IQ is much better than 28-300L.

5D2 up to ISO3200 has very little noise.
But I'm getting more comfortable with Rebal high ISO noise this day, I used to set my T2i ISO 1600 max.

I used to own this lens for travel and I can say even thought its both expensive and heavy, it does bring a lot more convenient. Someone in the forum pointed out that we shouldn't be lugging huge amount of prime lenses for the ultimate images when we are holidaying which triggers me to seriously consider this zoom again ^^

Thanks! I've gotta set up a photo hosting account, to stay within the forum limits for picture sizes, they just get too small to tell anyone much. I've got over 100 from a recent trip to Hawaii that I'm pretty happy with that I took with the 28-300L...gotta get on it!

I'm always surprised by the negative comments this lens gets. I guess if you base a lenses performance on lens charts only instead of rear-world usage, that's what happens. I find this lens enables one to get close enough to a "great" picture that any shortcomings can be easily corrected in post work, unlike many lenses which don't leave you enough to work with due to a lack of IQ.

Yes, it's expensive (new), but considering that it appears to be, arguably, the ONLY "all purpose" lens which provides a professional build and IQ, it's hard to say it's too expensive as there isn't anything else quite like it to compare to.

I used free Flickr account till 3 years' ago - it only can host 200 photos, which was ok till I started to post more shoots.

I started my 1st post in POTN in 28-300L thread after I saw far too many bad sample from this lens; I believe that we need to learn to live with limitation and get the best out off any tool / lens.

Just come back holiday in Europe; I had some evening shoot in the cities with 24-105L @ f/4, which push my 5D2 to ISO3200; and the similar shoot with 85L @ f/1.2 only needed ISO800. That would be the same story if I carried a 28-300L.

So, if shooting in landscape @ f/8 ~ f/11, we can get lot more shoot out with 28-300L; but handhold city low light shoots, I'll pick fast prime all time.

My next trip back to NZ this April, have to be this 28-300L for sure :)

Thanks X_Tan. That was just the default LR3 B&W conversion as I haven't a clue what B&W really needs in post processing.

Too bad we won't see any of your European shots in this thread.

Couldn't agree more with your assessment of this lens. The tripod is my friend. I am amazed that as many of my early handheld zoo shots @ 300 mm, f/5.6, 1/10 - 1/125, 10 - 30 ft. are actually quite usable! Depth of field is quite narrow but the eyes are in focus and sharper than most give this lens credit.

Last minutes decision - better used black lens in the cities rather than big white lens.

I figured out that a big white lens attracted far too much unwanted attention in Italy, so I brought 85L instead, sorry

Second air show. First with this lens. Both 220 mm, f/8, 1/1600, ISO 400. The first one is cropped quite a bit because I'm a novice when it comes to tracking these things and didn't want to chop off one or both planes. The second is not cropped.

Thank you both.

Meeko, this show was at Alliance Airport north of Fort Worth, Texas. The 7D and 28-300 combo worked well except when the planes were flying out of the sun, which was most of the morning. The AF would start seeking under those circumstances. That may have been user error/inexperience too. It was a vast improvement over the Rebel XT with 75-300 used the previous year, which required manual focus most of the time.

The 100-400 is probably the better choice for air shows but the 28-300 is no slouch.

Ok I have this lens on a 5d Mark II. I plan on taking it on a trip with me to the Northern part of NY near Syracuse area and even further North. I haven't used it much but I was wondering how the bokeh is on it and if any you had any tips on how to achieve better bokeh on portraits with it. I'll be doing some couples while I'm in the area. (the few test shoots I've done it seems to shoot a bit soft, BUT this could TOTALLY be user error) I'm just learning my 5d and this lens it's and upgrade from a 50d.

Sastone, I wish I knew how to answer the portrait/bokeh question. I don't do portraits and as far as bokeh goes... I get what I get.

As for sharpness I have read some of the same things on the 100-400 thread. Jeff explains it quite well here. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=13966436&postcount=5629 The fact that you are just learning the 5D could be compounding the problem. There are so many factors that go into a great image.

If exposure is off, sharpness suffers. I have found sharpness is best between 100-200 mm, f/8-f/11and within 60 ft. Motion blur can be a challenge in low light but I have gotten usable images handheld in low light at 300 mm, f/5.6, .6 seconds handheld from 10-15 feet.

I have found that any lack of sharpness with the 28-300L at 300mm can be cleaned up by a considerable amount by just stopping down to f/6.3, which shouldn't make much of a difference at all assuming you aren't in low light fighting with the shutter speed.

While stopping down more might make a bigger improvement, I've found f/6.3 is a good compromise to ensure solid results while keeping the lens performing "fast" enough for most things.

Lovely tiger portraits, Charles.

I don't use 28-300L for portrait after I have few prime lenses.

From Photozone.de (http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/426-canon_28300_3556is_5d?start=2):
The resolution figures are actually pretty good in the 28-100mm range but there's an obvious penalty beyond 200mm with rather soft borders at large apertures.

For portrait, many people don't want them 'too sharp' anyway.
? 300mm @ f/5.6 have the 'best' bokeh with 28-300L:

The debate here is very informative and great pictures too from this controversial lens. I see most of them are taken with a 5D2. I only saw a few from a 7D. Does this combo work well? Main use is a planned safari and mountain hikes in the pyrenees, hence the lens does all attarction. Thanks

Sure. I use mine for hiking all the time on my 7D. Look back a few pages for shots I posted of that combo in this thread.

You don't get a good wide angle, so you have to decide if that's important to you, but outside it's a great lens. I find carrying the 28-300 and an ultra-wide angle give you all you could ever need for hiking.

The lighter and more logical solution for hiking is to take the Canon 15-85, and that's it.

However, I like to have the ability to zoom in a second if the opportunity comes...too many times I have seen a dolphin out in the water while hiking in Hawaii, and by the time I fumble around in my hiking backpack to get a telephoto out, it's gone.

I like the 28-300 7D combo but I don't have much to compare it to. It covers everything from the close-ups to landscapes to the zoo to air shows. From what I have read the 7D AF is better than the 5D2. The 7D will have more reach but 5D2 images can probably be cropped to achieve a similar result.

For a safari I would rent a 100-400 L for a little more reach. The 28-300 L works well for airplanes and big birds in flight like geese. I rarely can get close enough to any smaller birds like ducks in flight for a decent image.

Thanks guys :)

In the 1st days I also carried another two lenses: 85L II & 24L II, which were far too heavy during the hiking. And I didn't use them at all.

I feel more and more comfortable to use this lens in it's maximum aperture, which is more than capable to produce some wonderful photos.

And it's small aperture around f/16 - f/18 are also very usable.

Doing well. Between surgurys, illnesses and work, I haven't had much time to spend on photography. And when I have, I've been using my 300 f/2.8 prime a lot. I do plan on using this lens again soon, though. It's a fun one.

This was the most fun I've ever had on a shoot! Knee deep in water, barefoot, sun just over the horizon and trying not to think how much it would cost if... This is one of the same trees I posted a while back. It's good to see the water level almost back to normal levels.

These were taken in Cades Cove ( Smoky Mountain National Park ) in east Tennessee over Easter weekend. The full grown bears are use to people. They see a few hundred thousand tourist a year...you can get within 75-100' of them. The Park Service, I believe say keep 150'. With cubs, it's not too smart to place your self between them and momma bear...she watches over the litter pretty close. She'll let you know if your too close by standing up on two legs or rattling a tree branch. When she does that.. the cubs are immediately running to her side. The cubs are spooky and always looking at you until they are two years old or so. At 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old, momma bears will abandon them and they are on there own. Around me were 15-20 people that I sized up and was sure I could out run them all, lol If not I had a 5# white club with a 7D mallet attached, lol

We travel from Michigan to TN about every 6 weeks for at least a long weekend. We love the Smokies and I have thousands of photos. Cades Cove is gods country closely followed by the Roaring Fork outside of Gatlinburg, or Greenbriar or Cosby or...well you get the picture. There isn't a time we visit that we don't make the drive through Cades Cove. Next trip Memorial Day ...should be many more bears, deer and turkey out...and tourist :p
