Hi,
I have been using a 35-80mm & an 80-200mm f4-5.6 for basketball but was thinking of going to the 28-105 f3.5-4.5. Will setting this lens manually to 3.5 give me better results? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It's only going to be f3.5 on the wide end. I would guess about 40mm it will go to f4 and at 70 f4.5. It's not going to work well for basketball. Check into a Sigma 70-200 f2.8, used. You should be able to find one under $700. You could sell your 80-200 to help cover the cost. Otherwise, check into the 85 f1.8 for around $350.

I purchased the Canon 85mm 1.8 Prime for taking pictures of my children playing basket ball. Works great especially if the gym is poorly lighted. I was impressed with this lens.

If you're going to shoot high school basketball, use a fast prime. I use two bodies and alternate between the 50mm, 85mm f/1.8, and the 100mm f/2. Check my site (link below) for examples of basketball pics from last season.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think, after further review, I will probably opt for the 85mm. It sounds like it should work well, especially in those not so well lit high school gyms.
