I would like to combine two of the posts below. There was a thread of newbie (like me ) queswtions on lenses. it had a great link to information on canon lenses. There is also a thread on the value of L - glass with digital. Someone posted an excellent 100% crop of two lenses. It would find it very helpful if some of the more experienced shooters could do the same with the classes of lenses described in the FAQ... or even sigma, Tamron, etc. Thanks

I may have posted it, but please don't take it as representative of all "consumer" vs. "L" lenses. There are some great non-L lenses out there. If it is the picture you are thinking of, it was taken with each lens at its extreme open-aperture position. That's a tough position for a lens to be in.
My point with the post was that post-processing wasn't going to solve all glass problems, and that good glass did have an advantage over average glass, especially under more extreme conditions.
Neither of the two lenses were "L" glass, but one was a mid-priced Canon lens (the first one), and the better one was a more expensive Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX lens. That particular Sigma is a very good lens. Almost as good as its Canon "L" counterpart.

i looked on ebay and saw both. the only difference seems to be the metal vs plastic mount. is it better to try and find a metal? or just get a new one without the hassle of Ebay?

This page (http://194.100.88.243/petteri/pont/Reviews/g_Fifty_versus_fifty/a_Fifties_duel_--_f1.4_vs_f1.8.html) is a comparison of the 1.4 and the 1.8 mkI, but at the bottom there is also some comparison of the mkII. If you aren't going to go with the 1.4 it looks like the mk I has a slight edge over the mk II. If you can find one that you can trust getting, the mkI is a better buy.
