How to reduce the size of a file for an avatar? Okay, I've got a great avatar, less than 80 pixels now how do I reduce the size less than it's present file size to 6 kb as required?

I had to save mine as a GIF file. Much smaller than the JPG equivalent. I hope it works for you.

See if you can reduce the number of colors too... I think gif is automatically 256???

And of course use jpeg compression... what image editor do you use?

CDS,

Thanx for the reply, not sure what you mean. If you have the time Pm exact instructions. I thought I was pretty computer savy.

I created mine by cropping one of my photos square and resizing to 60X60 pixels using Paint Shop Pro.

I made mine by taking a picture of my red 10d (I can't remember if I took the picture with my green 10D or the rainbow-colored G5). I cropped it to 72 X 71 pixels, and saved it as a GIF file. It took me a little time (and some adult supervision) before I figured out that a JPEG file wasn't going to work.

The newer versions of Photoshop allow you to select the compression quality of the jpeg image, and hence the file size.

You can do this by going: File --> Save for web...

Guys,

Thank you so much. Reading your replies pointed me in the right direction. I was saving the reduced size as other than JPEG and didn't realize it. Duh
