I just bought a G2 and would like to use a Nikon SB-24 flash with it. Before I connect it to the camera and possibly fry the electronics on both units, I thought I'd check to see if that is an option. Can you only use Canon dedicated flash units on this camera.

Keith,
This is a wonderful link with JUST the information I was looking for. I am an former professional photographer with a gizzilion dollars worth of studio lighting and nikon dedicated flash stuff.
Intellectually I knew I could hook up my standard studio lights, but had reservations in using a multi-pin Nikon flash. According to the article you suggested, it confirmed my concerns about using ANYTHING but a single pin hot shoe.
Thanks so much for the great advise. Do you find that when you go to print pictures from the G2 you have to do a lot of manipulation in Photoshop to get the correct color balance and contrast settings or is it just a matter of resizing the image and tweaking the unsharp mask settings?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Bob

Keith,
I hope your camera arrives soon. This past weekend I shot a quick wedding for a friend, not as "the" photographer, but just for candids. I've been doing photography for over 30 years from Nikons to Hassleblads, and I don't think I've had as much fun with a new camera as this one.
It really gave me great images without having to really concentrate on all the technical things. The saturation, resolution and convenience was terrific. I use a Nikon D1 digital camera at work, but opted for the smaller size and convenience of the G2. It was a much better camera for the type of shots I wanted to take. I didn't have to lug a big camera and flash around all day with me.
I'm sure you're going to love the camera once you get it. I'm also waiting for a new Canon S9000 printer that I've got on order to arrive. It should give me some nice prints in combination with the camera.
Thanks for your good suggestions!

Bob,
What was your finding with the G2/Nikon Speedlight? I have a G2 and an SB24 and SB25 and would LOVE to be able to utilize them.
Thanks,
Frank

Hi KiwiKeith,
Canon don't know when they'll have more G2's in Australia, either, but they are plentiful in the shops - you might want to consider getting one over - the black model is readily available in Adelaide...

Just a quick update on my G2. I received a new Canon S9000 printer today and I was amazed! It really gave me the same quality prints as if I custom printed them myself in the darkroom. And talk about FAST! I printed a 8 x 10 in about a minute
Now what am I going to do with ALL my old darkroom equiptment!
About the only thing I did to the prints was to adjust the color balance slightly in Photoshop and do a minor unsharp mask on them. They actually looked fine but I knew I had to fiddle a little bit with them so I could think that my expertice was needed (sad to say it probably wasn't). At least I FELT an important part of the creative process.
The black and white printing for regular "Word" type docs is acceptable, but not fast. If you are going to use this for printing documents you can save a lot of money and get a much cheaper printer that is quicker and better for that purpose.
I was dissapointed with the fact that Canon doesn't have any mat finish paper available, only a gloss finish. It's strickly a personal thing, but that is a real void for my tastes.
BUT if your looking for a little darkroom that sits on your desk and can print out 13 x 19" prints that are indistingishable from a lab, then the S9000 is the right printer for you.

Kodak Ultima works real well with the S900/S9000 (it seems as good as the PR-101) - and you can get it in Matte or Gloss... I think you guys in the US can get a couple of sample sheets from Kodak if you have a look at the web site...
Cheers,

Thanks Stuart,
I'll give the Kodak paper a try. I've always been partical to a mat finish so having a good option is great.
I spoke to someone at Canon today, and they said that the papers from Epson and HP would give a greenish tint to the pictures, but she wasn't sure about the Kodak papers. If you've seen prints from the Kodak papers that are good, I'll just see if I can find that paper in Indianapolis and give it shot.
I looked at your gallery tonight, and I'm pretty jealous of your surroundings. We have nice cornfields here....no oceans or mountains!
