View Full Version : Holy Cow -- P4 vs old AMD -- I'm in trouble

Just "upgraded" my system from old AMD 1.1 gig CPU to P4 2.6 gig and can't believe it. It's slow as Christmas. Am I missing something here, or is this the way Photoshop 7 performs on a P4? If this is the case, I'll never buy another Intel.
Anyone with opinions? I know this is peripheral, but I just can't believe how slow it is.

I just upgraded from a 2.2Ghz AMD 333ghz FSB/ 512mb PC2700 ram to a P4 3Ghz with an 800mhz FSB/ 1gb (dual mode)PC3200 ram and its a different world!
AMD's are getting too expensive now. I wont buy another one.
Windows XP boots in approx 15 seconds, photoshop loads in at least a quater of the time it used to.
Suggestions:
Try to find out about your CPU FSB and your ram speed.
It makes a LOT of difference if they run together properly.
Also check how much ram you actually have.
Hard disk speed?

Just from the information you've given us it sounds like a lack of RAM. For reference, my PC is a 2.82ghz P4 (533fsb) with 1GB of PC2700 RAM and pshop loads up in about 5 or 6 seconds and there really isn't any noticable lag when manipulating images and such. Your processor is close enough in speed that it should be similar performance depending on the amount of RAM you've got.
Did you do a clean install of your OS when you installed the new hardware? Defragged the hard drive lately? HD speed? If you've got any question feel free to pm me here or on AIM and I'll try to help you with any hardware tweaks you may want to try.

I agree that if you would like some guidance we will need a bit more info on the set up. RAM is a likely possibility,. but it could be motherboard FSB as well.
At work I recently installed a "bargain" Compaq PC (the only PC I did not build,.. we were in a rush) It is a P4 "3.something" GHz...
It had XP home installed,. compared to my stripped to the bones clean install Win98 and or WinXP set ups on Athlon 1900 (1.6 GHz) it is slow as molasses!!!
A number of things are slowing it down,. not enough ram,. a slow FSB and a bloated Compaq WinXP install...

Well, here's what I did. I changed only motherboard and CPU, left everything else the same. RAM is DDR 512 meg PC 133, but from older board.
It's Win2k, and with the Athlon 1600 it was so fast. Software loads up quickly on this new setup -- seeing really good speeds there, but the instantaneous application of auto levels, for instance, now takes 5-10 seconds.
I wondered whether I should do another install of the system. Seems like once every couple of years is about what it takes to keep these things running smoothly these days.

Didn't you re-install your OS after the changes?
I'm surprised it works at all if this is the case.
A clean install might solve your problems if this is the case.
Your CPU is either 533FSB or 800FSB.
The ram looks to be a 'bottleneck' and I think you would benefit from PC2700 or PC3200.
What is the mobo brand/model? What graphic card are you using?

If you have an Intel 2,6 GB it will be a 800 Mhz FSB, Your memory reaches a maximum of 143 Mhz (chip at 7,5 ns, that is freq. of 143 MHz (1/0.000000007) in best case.
You can mount those memories only with a Pentium III max, with a chip-set i440BX e i810 enhanced, but at 133 Mhz FSB.
Change your memory and you'll reach the speed-up you need.

Not necessarily, look at the first cpu:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Intel_CPUs_15.html
that is a 2.8 but ive seen 2.6 with a 533FSB

You are right: there is an Intel Pentium 4 at 2,6 Ghz, 400 Mhz FSB that can achieve a PC133 SDRAM
DDR 266/200 SDRAM,
DDR 333/266/200 SDRAM,
DDR 333/266 SDRAM

Just reinstalled the complete operating system and all software. Much better now, although I'm sure I might benefit from some faster RAM. Problems with the application of levels, etc solved -- now instantaneous.
Thanks for the help and the prodding to reinstall.

Ah,. a little late now,.
...but it is possible to force an existing windows install to re-install all hardware from scratch.. (essentially you get the same process for hardware install that occurs with ta new install..)
All it requires is a simple registry tweek,. which removes ALL the installed hardware and forces a complete reinstall.
I've been doing this for years with Win98/95,. it works with XP too,. but the registry key is different.
I know it works for Win2K but I don't know the registry KEY in Win2K but I bet it's the same as either the WinXP one or the Win98 one.
For Win98 you delete the Hkey_local_machine_ "Enum" key
for XP it's Hkey_local_machine "Hardware"
...and bob's your uncle.. no reistall necessary for all your apps etc...
In the long run,. though, unless you keep things "squeaky clean" a full reinstall is a good thing anyway. :)

theres something wrong with your system, PS7 should fly now, how much ram is in your new system and what type [im guessing DDR]? What kinda of videocard you have, and whats the memory in that [32,64,or 128MB]?
Im on a 1.0GHz ATHLON with a GIG of RAM and my machine flies through photoshop.
