Will this flash on EBAY work on my 300D? In his description, it says for any Canon film camera. If it does not go much higher, the shipping would not count as the seller is in the same town as me. Thanks

All EX flashes will work with the EOS digital SLR so you shouldn't have any problems using the 380EX with your 300D. Just be aware that the head only tilts up. It doesn't swivel sideways. That may or may not matter to you.

Another feature lacking on the 380EX is flash exposure compensation (FEC). This capability is also absent on your 300D unless you hack the firmware.
The ability to adjust the flash exposure is critical. With the 380EX you will be stuck with the flash exposure it provides and no manual control. Thus you will have no more control than a P&S camera.
With the 300D, I highly recommend buying a flash unit with FEC. Such models include the Canon 430EX, 550EX and 580EX Speedlites, as well as the Sigma EF-500 DG Super.

If you are happy with the limitations, and can get it for a good price, it's not a bad upgrade from the on-board flash. Certainly more powerful and you can bounce but not tilt, as has been said, and this reduces a lot of the harshness of direct flash. another benefit is that red-eye becomes pretty much a thing of the past - the speedlight is above the plane of the lens so the red doesn't appear.
Used in P mode you will get good results. Use Av mode if you want to have greater control over the way the camera lights up the background ( the flash lights up the subject) Bear in mind that Av mode often gives a slow shutter speed, so a tripod is very useful.
I used the 380 EX very happily on my 20D for nearly a year. I've just got the 580EX and am thrilled with it, but still learning to use it properly.
I never felt hindered by the lack of flash exposure compensation when I used it on my film camera, but in those days I was very much green square, or at most P mode. now I have more features and the ability that digital gives you to experiment, i am really enjoying all the extra features on the 580
