Just curious if any 300D owners are thinking of switching to the Nikon D70 when it comes out.

Imho, lenses and related accessories are much important than camera. There is any Nikon lens with a red circle ?

I am going to wait a month or so before I drop my $1000 on a DSLR. I have to get my hands on the d70 before i fully make my decesion.

#1 I have too many Canon lenses.
#2 Make no mistake about it, each and every camera has and WILL have its own issues.

Not me either. I've too many lenses and I'm very used to the "Canon way".
Despite that, it seeems the D70 will be a very tough competition to both the 300D (featurewise) AND 10D (pricewise), but only time will tell. If the D70 delivers what it promises (and probably it will, as is only a evolution from the already good D100 and not a brand new camera as the D2H), it'll be a very difficult choice for "non legacy lenses" people!

My gut instinct is screaming "NONE!"
Why would anyone who just plunked down a minimum of $800 go out and buy a competing camera at more money?
The question you should be asking is "How many potential 300D purchasers are reconsidering their desire now that the Nikon product has been announced?"

I was tempted but ............
Canon still is the winner for me.
Just bought a Rebel and am quite happy with it.

Canon once, Canon for life!! ;) Well to be more serious, i personaly think there are two options to answer your question. The first one would be, why would you like to switch to the D70? because of the extra feature the D70 provides over the 300D?. then i would ask myself "should i switch to 10D"
But personnaly, i would stay with canon just because it is Canon. Because of the lens investment, you should decide youself for a brand, and stick to it. I never used any Nikkon camera, but from what i see on the market Canon is far more in advance: Look at the D2H for instance, Canon released a model witht the same specs ... only, it was 3 years ago. And now with the MarkII how many Nikkon user think "should i switch to canon??".
Anyway. choose, but choose wise!!

What is that Canon vs Nikon battle .
I'm fairly new to photography and decided for the 10D because of the feel of the camera, the D100 just felt old and blocky.
I think that if the D70 will be a success this is very nice for Canon owners, remember the 300D is a 10D internally with a few limitations, if Canon is smart (and they are) they can release within a few weeks a 300D mark II, blackcasing and lift some limitations of the 300D making it equal to the D70, which means the 10D will be next for an upgrade because the gap is too small, I'm allready saving money 8).
In my opinion Canon is very smart to use the same processor in all the camera's and censors, with software they can make a speedy competitor without having to redesign alot.

Frank

Yes true, Canon have a very sharp marketing strategy. And that is why i dont think they will overload their Dslr range with "half 10D half 300D" models (what you call the 300D markII). I think that would be a bad move.
They have a very neat range, from 300D for amateur to 10D for "prosumer" up to 1D 1DS professional range. this leave the customer with a clear image. If they do a 300D mark ii they would loose on either the 300D or 10D market, so i personnalywouldnt expect such a model.
in this respect Nikkon strategy is not as neat. they have a too wide range of Dslr. This leaves customers like me with the choice between D70 and ... D70!! ;) nothing really interesting bellow that, and the above models are two expensive to be tempting.
I dont know if i convinced you, but i ll ask Canon for a free 1D mark II for all my support to them in this thread!! ;)
cheers, Dan

Hmmm... not sure about this question, but...
A lot of 35mm Canon users will have Canon glass, and many have moved to the 10D or 300D to get into digital. So if you have the lenses built up it's highly unlikely you'll want to switch to Nikon.
The Nikon and the D300 look about the same to me, when all is said and done, so I'm not sure what significant advantage a switch would be.
I'll stick with the 300D/D-Rebel for a few years then buy whatever the 10D's equivalent will be then, plus a serious L-glass zoom.

I chose Canon because they are (and probably will be for some time) The Top Dog in DSLR land, they have a very nice range of EF lenses, and Canon cameras and lenses are usually just a little cheaper than Nikon cameras and lenses. I haven't studied the prices of Nikon lenses, but I've often seen people write that Nikon only has VR (vibration reduction) on very expensive lenses, while Canon has its equivalent IS also on affordable lenses like the 28-135.
As others have already noticed, the D70 by itself looks really interesting, but it's much more important to look at the whole system - lenses, flashes, other accesories - rather than just the camera.

I have to agree with several of the other respondents. I've invested too much money in Canon glass to consider another camera brand. Also, I'm very happy with the Canon equipment I have purchased.

I am a press photographer, and I have to use either a Nikon D1X or D1 at work everyday. I love it when I have the weekends off and I can get back to my Canon stuff!! Although the D1X produces slightly superior images to my 10D colour-wise, I find Canon much easier to use; most adjustments are very intuitive. It takes me a few mins to make the Nikon-Canon transition though- the meter on each system is the other way round to each other which can be very confusing!!

On that note...who expects the 300d to drop in price with the release of the Nikon D70?

Over my dead body, and you have to pry open my hand to get my Canon off me!
Seriously, I find Canon produced much better cameras and lenses than Nikon, (had Nikon once, those old time when film is still being used, hated it, sold it off and bought a canon EOS 630 and have nevr look back since) Canon services are much much better too, always prompt service. Bought a Nikon film scanner way back and had problem with it from day one and when I called up Nikon, was told to wait for 1 week because all their technicians are outstation!! Could you believe the reply?!) Anyway, back to Canon, technology wise, I think Canon is always a step or two in front of everybody else. :D

I have not yet decided which company I will go with but for the last couple of months I’ve been leaning towards canon. One of the only things that interested me about Nikon was the D70 specs and the 10.5mm full frame fisheye. I figured I could just buy the 300d and if I really wanted a wide lens I could buy the Sigma 12-24 lens and then start my collection on canon lenses. I think after reading this thread and writing this reply I have been convinced to go with canon. :D

I'm like a lot of others here....got too much $$ invested in glass to make that change, for now at least. If I make a change, it will be for the 10d replacement or maybe.....a MkII. Just gotta convince the TOWMBO that I need a new camera vs landscaping the back yard....

Personally I've compared the specs and I'm glad I bought the Drebel. It's like the classic Ford vs Chevy, Pepsi vs Coke, McDonalds vs Burger King arguments. There are some diehard groups in each camp, and it's true that each will have their drawbacks. Like I prefer PCs and Macs for different reasons - they each have their foibles.
But I think I'll be a Canon diehard for a long time. If I were considering purchasing a DSLR for the first time and compared the 300D with the D70, I'd have gone with the 300D anyway. Nothing against Nikon but ... I just prefer the Canon.
Now, as the D70 seems to be direct competition to the 300D, I'd like to see if Nikon comes out with a 10D equivalent.
