I found a lone ant on an Oak tree this morning. Bit bigger than my garden ants - ID?
Also met a lone Nikon user trying out a new D80 with a Tamron 90 - alas no flash with him so limited success. I would die for that large LCD screen - 2.5" like the 400D/30D.

Excellent series- what length approx?
Must say I rarely use the LCD but suppose that's really because I don't need to review/delete in the field

I would guess near 7mm. Probably just a Red ant, Myrmica rubra. I think all the Wood ants have darker abdomens?

Agreed, excellent series of images RM.
I'm surprised that you don't review/delete in the field Brian, do you just simply take shots and do all of the review/delete on the PC instead? Or are you that good that you don't take dud images hehehe ;)

Great series RM. Was this taken with the MPE-65? Beats me how you guys can use it. I battle to find things with the Sigma 105 and 68mm tubes

I saw a particularly large sugar ant yesterday and got a few images of it. It was at least 30% larger than the norm I reckon, I'd say at least 18mm - 19mm in body length! Will post when I get a chance...

At this time of the year the MPE65 really comes into its own as there is very little about that can be captured at under x3 mag. Mostly subjects are so small that if they don't move you wont see them.

Super series RM. How did you brace your camera to maintain your focus?

sometimes I carry a monopod but this shoot was at lower level than my pod will collapse too (have ordered a Velbon ultra stick which collapses to 32cm) so I used a stout stick to brace against. Quite often I will just hand hold and hope the flash freezes any movement but LordV has shown that even with flash a support makes a difference tosharpness.
