Happy new year everyone! I've been lurkin on here for some time while pondering what camera to get after I recently sold my Nikon gear.

Today I finally ordered all the goodies in my signature from an exceptionally friendly member of these here forums! Special thanks to Radiohead for his suggestions regarding my purchase.

I still have plenty of gadgets from the old camera such as CF cards, HyperDrive, tripod, camera bags, etc. Is there anything specific to Canon that I should get? I couldn't really find out what's included with the 5D so I was wondering if I should get a remote and a rubber eye cup. I'm going to get a Sto-fen Omnibounce for the flash since it doesn't come with a diffuser. How about software, a Nikon Capture equivalent? Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Cheers.

My pleasure Tim - I hope you enjoy the new kit when it arrives!

The first thing I did was to buy the Ee-D focussing screen (which has gridlines on it) - makes a big improvement in composing for me. Software, you'll have DPP with the 5D (full version etc) which is pretty decent, and I'd be looking at Lightroom as a PC user, Aperture for Mac users and Capture One/Bibble for both if you don't like DPP.

I'll look into that focussing screen. Does the 5D come with a remote and what's the eye cup like? I bought an aftermarket eye cup for my D70 and it was the best $5 spent in that camera. ;)

Cheers.

The better remote to get is about £65 or so (Canon TC-80N3) but if you don't use it much then the much cheaper RS-80N3 will do the trick.

No probs with the eyecup and I'm speccy-boy.

depending on the shooting you do the cp-3e battery pack might be a good add on for your flash (faster recyle times and more shots per charge)

also the battery grip might be worth looking into just two trains of thought

Thanks for the suggestions, Dom.

I think I can live without the battery pack for the flash, but the grip sounds like a good thing to get. I never felt the need for a second shutter release on my D70 but the extra batter time surely comes in handy.

Cheers.

adding the battery grip to any camera makes it feel completly different
on my XT i have a grip and i never take it off, and i rarely use the vertical buttons (maybe for 5% of my shots) - and the second battery doesnt worry me either, i just like being able to grab a full handful of camera not having my little finger grabbing air
