I'm heading out to the Brooklyn DUMBO area to get shots of teh bridges from a park there (saw it on another forum)

I'm hoping to go this weekend.. I was hoping to go early so I could get some sunrise shots but will probably end up going wtih a big strong neighbor of mine... another photog bug...

Interested? If not, I'd still be interested in going around with you. I'm still learning and need all the help I can get. Keep in mind... my equipment log is extremely limited... haven't lept to dSLR yet... *sigh

If you guys get a chance, go to the west side highway down past 96th street and get along the river. Great shots of the GW. I drive past it every morning and keep threating to pull over in one of the prking lots to take a few shots.

Alos, get to the mid to hi 40's on the east side and get the 59th street bridge or go over to the high 70's and you could get the Tram going across with the bridge behind it.

THANK YOU soileauj!! i've been trying to find a spot for the GW for AGES!! i drive past it alot, but could never find a spot where i could just park and get out to shoot.. i'll definatly look for the spot!

Just for us "Non New Yorkers" (Hell I ain't even American!), you're talking about getting a shot of the George Washington Bridge from the Riverside Park at around 96th Street or higher? And just to make sure...can you cross over the Amtrak line to get closer to the river?

I've been on there. In fact, I've posted some pictures from that pathway near the river. We walked the whole legnth of Washington Heights... right underneath the bridge... great views... I'm sure with a more equipped camera you could get some awesome shots.

I'll see if I can cojole a friend into coming too. Looking forward to it!

Paul if you enter riverside park either way uptown at 180th street or around 96th (or even in between) you can go right over to river's edge where there is a path.

If you don't want to go intot eh city for the shot you can go to either: Fort Lee Historical Park for an up-close look at the bridge, or you can go to the palisades interstate park boat basin for a long view looking south and then drive under the bridge.

Fort Lee park:

Thanks a lot Crissa! I'll be staying in West 81st Street so I can walk to the park, although I'll probably take the No.1 subway train to 96th and enter the Riverside Park from there and just stroll up towards the GW bridge snapping a shot as I go.

My MTA map I have here shows the Amtrak being between me and the riverside so I wondered if you have to cross over it at some point (or is it underground?)

As far as I know Amrtack lines are on one side of the road, Water on the other, look at the West Side Highway, not Riverside Drive, once you get above 86th street Riverside goes more inland and the train will interfere. Look at Riverside PARK, not drive. Take a peek here (http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_your_park/vt_riverside_park/vt_riverside_park.html) . Above 158 street it becomes fort washington park, and don't forget to visit the little red lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge!

Tompkins Square Park - Sunday, August 26th

Abbey Lincoln, who turns 77 this August, is one of the last great jazz singers. With nearly sixty years of experience, she’s honed her voice to expressive perfection, achieving a depth and emotive power that few can equal. In addition to being a master interpreter, Lincoln is also an accomplished songwriter. On her new album “Abbey Sings Abbey,” released May 22, she revisits originals from her classic Verve records investing them with new meaning and varied shadings.

Last seasons’ festival was set to feature Chico Hamilton in celebration of his 85th Birthday; unfortunately an untimely illness cancelled those plans. This year Hamilton’s drumming will shake up the bandstand on both the Saturday and Sunday programs. Hamilton represents an extraordinary link to jazz history: in the ‘40s he played with up-and-comers like Dexter Gordon and Charles Mingus; as a member of Gerry Mulligan’s quartet in the ‘50s he helped give birth to cool jazz; and with his own quintet in the late ‘50s, he broke racial and stylistic boundaries.

Known for his work with Abbey Lincoln and Stefon Harris, Marc Cary is one of the most original pianists on the jazz scene. He’s not afraid to let his artistic impulses take him in unexpected directions: as a leader, he’s put out acoustic trio records under the name Focus, organized the world music collective Indigenous Peoples and even explored electronica on a project called Rhodes Ahead. Entertainment Weekly has praised Cary’s “expansive vision of mainstream jazz," noting that he “packs a devastating punch.”

New York native Lezlie Harrison’s voice has a dusky soulfulness which complements her chosen repertoire of jazz, 70s classic soul and original material. Raised in Harlem during a time when African-American and Latin music styles were in full flower, she also spent a great deal of her childhood in North Carolina, singing in the choir of her grandfather’s church. This deep grounding in gospel, blues, Latin and soul can be heard every time Harrison sings and has led people like Roy Hargrove and Dr. Lonnie Smith to seek out her sultry and sensual presence on the bandstand.

Todd Williams started making music early: he took up saxophone when he was 10, was a star of the local St. Louis high school and university marching bands by 15, and had introduced himself to Wynton Marsalis at 16. He was playing in the great trumpeter's band a few years later. A veteran of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and a neo-traditionalist seeped in the history of jazz, Williams brings an extra spiritual dimension to his sound. A long association with the Times Square Church and the Manhattan Praise Band insures that gospel is never far from Williams' heart.

Trumpeter Maurice Brown is the most talked-about young horn man since Nicholas Payton first emerged in the ‘90s. The 26-year old Chicago native started playing in high school, and almost immediately showed himself to be a prodigy. His 2005 album Hip To Bop earned him raves like this one from Downbeat: “Brown is one of the most exciting young trumpeters in jazz--be it New Orleans or New York. His improvisations are fresh, his chops dynamic and he’s writing what could very well become a new generation of hard-bop-meets-new-grooves standards.”

I thought I'd revive this thread. Any of these meets actually happen? I'd be interested in going on a shoot if anyone is willing to brave the cold and has some ideas on where to go. I'm relatively new to photography and I'd love to get some advice on some good places to shoot.

Well I went to NYC and didn't manage to see anyone I knew :D I went up to 168th St (?) and headed towards the Hudson River to get a shot of the George Washington Bridge. I had to walk quite a distance through Columbia University to find the best vantage point. It's a bit scary up there at night, but worth the effort. Some great shots to be had around sunset.

If I went again, I'd take the A train to 175th Street and head west from there.

I'll be on LI sometime in the next few days, and I'll be there until the beginning of January while I'm on break from school. I'd be up for some photography in NYC, though I'm not really sure of where the cool places to go would be.

I'll be back at my parents' house on LI the first week of March. I'm not sure how much free time I'll have, but I'd like to make it into NYC at least one or two days to go wandering around with my camera. If anyone wants to try to make plans for then send me a message the last week of February and I should know how much free time I'll have.

I'm a newbie, and I live in Paramus NJ, and work in Jersey City, so NYC sounds great.

I'm glad to heare there's NY'ers looking to shoot, and I'm interested in tagging along, if there's another outing. I hope to learn from anyone who does not mind offering tips! I'm getting more comfortable with my new 5D every day, and love shooting! As a graphic designer, this is sooo exciting to me.

Keep me informed of any new outings, if you don't mind!
