This image says so much. Long days putting up with my crap are endurable when the occasional foam party breaks out. New Year's day in paradise!
Enjoy!

Oh believe me.... you have *NO* idea.... fkkin Zitune spraying everyone with water. Camera was drenched. Soapy water dripped out of the CF card slot. Battery was wet. I'm letting her dry now.... I hope it's ok. Recovered the files from the night but windows only saw corrupt files. Hm.
It was fun though =) Very worth it.

Well, you could've sold some of the stuff you've received from your parents over the years. Or asked them to help out especially since your mom buys a lot of stuff for you.
All depends on how badly you want to experience something like that offer. There's always a way to make it work in same way, shape, or form.
That would be too risky, getting out in the world and all

Could have, I suppose. Wouldn't know what I could sell to get that much, though. How much was your ticket? Mind saying?
Money's tight at the moment, though. Mom won't be springing for anything anytime soon.

Nice.. it shows the 1D has what it takes.
Lots complain about "Canon didn't define weather sealing" well this is as much torture testing as any rig can be reasonably expected to stand up to.
I went on my first mission where weather sealing made-or-broke the shoot - fireworks in the rain. Incidentally, for thy information, there *IS* a reason why one should buy weather sealed lenses even if one does not have a 1-series body - it's easier to ziplock bag the body while leaving the lens to stick out. After all, that IS supposed to be what catches the light to take the pretty pictures.
I left my 1D somewhere inaccessible, so I was forced to run the mission with the ziplock and the 5D and 17-40. No problems. However, the 1D and successors have firmly cemented a place in my lineup for days like that. I'm genuinely impressed Canon put in the effort to weather-harden the 17-40 at its price point.

c'mon leave the guy alone already, so he missed out. Life will present other chances and i'm sure he learned his lesson when they come around again.
I would definately not bathe with a piece of kit like that, also correct me if i'm wrong but don't most lenses need a front filter to be fully weather sealed?
Great shots btw, but yanno that already ;)

so what happened to kev's camera?
The CF card went corrupt. I had to use CONVAR to recover files. Probably got 70-80% of them back, cos I recall some very specific shots that I didn't recover.
I let it dry that night. I took it out the next day, shot my daily beach/sailing shots. The mirror was all fogged up. The viewfinder started fogging up too. After a while, it cleared... and the back and top LCDs were all fogged. I freaked out. Kept shooting though, I was out there already =)
Got back. Let it bake in the beautiful sun. Everything seems ok now... besides ONE thing.
I did a mini-shoot later (3 photos). He didn't like the shots. I reshot it, (4 additional shots) using the same card. I stuck the card into the computer...
only the 3 original photos showed. Huh? I tried recovering using CONVAR.... the shots that I just took recovered fine. Interesting.
Oh... and I think my camera is deathly afraid of RiData cards now (the one that was dripping wet when I pulled it out of the foam party). I can format and use Jason's Sandisk cards fine, HOWEVER when I stick my RiData card it says "ErrorCF... Please Format" and when I format... it says "Cannot format, replace card".
I tried with both my 2GB RiData cards... same thing! I tried formatting in Jason's camera, it formats fine but not in mine. I tried formatting in Windows, I even tried writing all zeroes using various programs. NOTHING. My camera wont take RiData cards anymore....
Hm....
When I finally escape this paradise of sun, sea, sand... it's going straight to Canon. They might have a chuckle how much sand is in there =)

Dude that shot is brilliant.. and you are MUCH braver than any of us to wade right in. Does the foam sting if it gets in your eyes? I'd be more concerned about my ability to shoot!
Dump the cheap Ridata crap, Sandisk exists for a reason. ;)

Yes yes yes.... the foam (are actually soap suds and WATER) stings like a fkkn b!sh. Ouch! I spent a lot of time wiping it out of my eyes, but then decided I was missing too many good shots so I just shot blindly. I let the camera choose the AF point (which is pretty good at doing), shot pretty narrow aperture (f/11) and hoped for the best.
I had more issues with soap on the filter (and blurring EVERYTHING) than misfocussing.
Not to mention the soap suds in the viewfinder making it impossible to use....

Man that is truly a TORTURE test of the 1D. I'd be concerned more about eye protection.. no wonder the chick in the first shot is wearing wraparound sunglasses.
One of the awesome things about the 45 point AreaAF is that it is A LOT SMARTER than 9-point AF about choosing the right things to lock onto. I can't exactly quantify it, but after long experience, I do not trust multipoint AF with my 350D, 20D or 5D.. but I trust it with the 1D. Only very rarely does it get it wrong and that is why I have Cfn 18-2.
You are brave.. the most I've ever done is stand out in the rain with my 5D and 17-40 (bag the 5D but the weathersealed lens can stick out) waiting for fireworks to start. Really had to put in the effort to clean the filter from all the rain stains though!

LOL. You guys kills me! Nice foam fight. I'm interested to know how the camera is doing. I don't think I'd even dare getting my 5D near a mess like that since it isn't weather sealed, but a nice waterproof disposable probably would have been fine. :)

Are you kidding me? He was constantly being pummeled by a fire hose 15 feet from him! The weather sealing holds just fine. I've posted the exact same event and results from my 1Ds with zero fogging or issues with battery of CF card ingress.
Quite the contrary, I think KevC and myself have proven the weathersealing of a 1 body is kick a$$!

Well it worked to a degree, but having to send it into Canon i don't think really holds that completely true. But I guess we'll know more after Canon gets back to him.

I really want to hear and SEE more about the 1D waterproofing and what it can stand up to.
Excellent shots with the foam party!
