Ok, here is my problem. When I try to create a new layer in Photoshop, it no longer shows me the new layer so I can paste only the section that I want. Lets say I have about 3 people in one picture, but only want to crop out 1 person. I used to select that object, create new layer and paste the object to the new layer. Now I can't seem to do that. I go thru the same steps as before, but the new layer does not appear for me to past the cropped object. Do I make sens or ? Help is appreciated. thanks

it should be enough to select an area and do a copy/paste. A new layer should be made automatically.
If t isn't doing this then you are maybe working in a colour mode that doesn't support layers.
Check the colour mode and let us know.

what color mode should I be at? I have reset my settings in Photoshop to no avail. I also checked my other computer, it has version 7 and the same thing is happening. It used to open the new layer in a second window and then I could paste the object to it. Now I only see the new layer in the layer pallete. I am lost. The cropping portion works like I wanted the layer portion to work. hope I am not confusing you

Yes, you are confusing us, as well as yourself. Do this:
1. open your image.
2. make a selection (however you like).
3. ctrl/c to copy the selection.
4. ctrl/d to deselect.
5. ctrl/v to paste the selection.
You now have two layers. In the bottom layer is the original image. In the top layer is the selection, with the remainder of that layer transparent. (Switch the bottom layer off by clicking its eye to verify this).
If you now want a different background to the selection, select the bottom layer and make what changes you like to that image, or paste in a new background image.

I was doing one thing, and thinking of another. I should not have been doing Layers, should have been doing New Document. Like I said, I AM ASHAMED. Sorry for the confusion and posting something DUMB like this. Just a moment of BRAIN FAR*, BRAIN FREEZE, and all the wonderful dumbness of my part.
