i'm trying to convince myself that i can sell my sigma 10-20 and be happy with the 17-40 on my 20D? i just want to start collecting L's for whenever i can afford a 5D.

thanks. that last one is sufficiently wide. and you can't beat the color/sharpness of the "L"

You'll be happy with the 17-40 as long as you don't do most of your shooting currently between 10-17mm on your Sigma. It really is a different perspective. Try using your Sigma at 17mm for a day and see if that really is wide enough for you.
If you pop over to either of my photo sites most of the shots were taken usin the 17-40. There's a sticky at the top of this page called lens sample archives, and there's a TON of shots with this lens there. Check it out.

Native Resolution, contrast down to show the detail on the roof <--- Good Golly, that looks sensor resolution limited to me!

Its a great lens but I would wait until you have a 5D before buying this lens. Its a good lens but it is very similar in range (ONLY!) to the kit lens. Is that enough wideness for you? Keep your UWA lens, buy a 17-40 L when you get your 1.3 or FF camera and be happy. It isnt like they will run out.
Yes it works great on a 20D, I am selling mine and probably will regret it one day. So sharp.

I have both the 17-40 and 17-55 EF-S. Since I got the 17-55 never use the 17-40. The 17-55 is a much better lens for use on a 20D. It is sharper, faster, longer zoom range and has IS. If I didn't need to keep a wide angle lens for my film camera I would get rid of the 17-40. I would not compromise my current photography because of some camera I might get in the future.
