Well yes it is. However im pretty sure there arnt any large softboxes made for speedlights. Also speedlights arnt very powerful so you will be using large aperatures if you do use a large softbox no doubt.
So if your willing to modify a softbox to fit a speedlight and you dont mind using large aperatures then yes it is possible.

I use my 580 with a 24x36 sb. At iso100 and about 5-6 ft, I could get f8 at full power.

I can use a 430EX in an umbrella box about f5.6 at five - six feet. (ISO100).

ohh.. can i do it with a 550? is the 580 much better? and how do i modify softboxes so it will fit..?
