Canon 380ex question

In posting an earlier question regarding this flash, alot of the replies were very good but also at a technical level over my head. As I understand, this flash is basically only automatic to operate with the camera in the green auto function. A hack for the camera was mentioned but I know nothing about this.

This question is: Will this flash just not work at all in the other manually operated camera functions?

It will work in any of the creative modes, as well as the basic modes that use flash (not sports or landscape modes). The limitation with the 300D is its lack of the ability to adjust its output with FEC. You're stuck with the exposure the camera thinks is right.
