My other thread about Lense Math gives me an idea.

Questions that would have been asked of this forum, if money was no object:

#1 I just bought 20 canon lenses, how the hell should I store them- front up or front down?? Can I use my 1000 bottle wine cellar for storage??? Is 55-58 degrees then a good storage temp for lenses as well, as I don't want to get another wine cellar???"

#2 My EF 600 4/L doubles as a plant holder. What filter is best to protect the front element from dirt and water?

#3 What names are popular for the 1Ds, 1DII, 10D? I'm trying to encourage individuality.

#4 My 1D is broken, the flash won't pop up.

#5 I just went down to the B&H for the 12th time to get yet another 1Ds. Man, they don't build much memory into these things

In the same vein, here are a couple more:
"My 2-gig CF card is full. Can I just throw it out with normal trash, or does it have to be recycled with the aluminum cans?

I'm using a Louis Vuitton satchel as a camera bag. Guccis are so common.

:? :?

1) Do I need batteries in my off camera flash (Model 1000W) or will the battery in the camera fire it?

2) How come my 10D doesn't use AA batteries?

3) Why doesn't the Canon software work with Windows For Workgroups V3.1?

4) Where can I get a nifty beast of burden like Gitzo?
(OK so no one sane would ask that question)

5) I dropped my kit off a 10 story building. There is a hole in my Louis Vuitton satchel bag now. Do you think it can be repaired?

Add to the list:

-After harvest time, do I still need to be concerned with the crop factor?

-If I shoot at a high ISO, should I change my CF cards in subdued light?

#15. My disposable camera is only 11 megapixels

#16. Why did I buy Universal? They said I needed a Studio.

#17. I just upgraded my PC. Is a terabyte enough?

Too slow on that one, it is already happening: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10118

:D

#18. Oh, I didn't realise that you needed a special case to use a 1Ds and a 600 L lens underwater for scuba diving. I thought the camera and lens were environmentally sealed. Never mond, will make a nice paperwieght, once I drain the seawater out.

Cheers

Ian

I see they're not expected to ship until the end of March. Probably because they only started formatting them in December. :p

OK then. Bets on when the first 1 terabyte CF card will be available.

2010?
2020?
2030?

Considering 10Gb (ok, 8Gb) are already here, I presume sometime betwenn 2010 and 2020, but closer to 2010. Probably by 2030 we'll have a 1 petabyte CF card (or, why not, 1 exabyte :)) but at those capacities, why bother to use external memories, probably the memory will be internal. And definitely NOT CF format, but some new nanosize cards if they are external ones :)

Given Moore's law, I'd expect it before 2010 (i.e., sooner than anybody would expect it, I haven't really done the math :))

Andy

I'm quickly gaining on my first Terabyte at home,. all told 870GB... (this includes redundant drives for backup/RAID)

Of course this is spread across three PCs...

Still the main PC has 590GB running... with the option of additional 32GB in the form of two tired old Enterprise 7200RPM 18GB Ultra Wide SCSI drives should I decide to fire up the SCSI chain.. (which I don't)

Coming back slightly, does anyone know the physical and/or architectural limits of CF technology :?: I know there was a limit with CF Type I (512MB, I think), and CF Type II goes beyond that - to what :?:
And, how much flash memory can be stuffed into the CF Type II form factor :?: Obviously, 8GB is possible, but how high can they go :?: And what's next - CF Type III :?:

Inquiring minds want to know :?:  :) :D :?:

My 2GB card (Ridata 52x) is a type I, so the 512MB limit has been blown away.

And what's next - CF Type III

Doubtful. It wouldn't be widely compatible. Miniaturization and higher density will prevent a larger physical form from being necessary.

But isn't there an addressability limit? FAT16, I believe. So, that is surmountable, and I understand the CF Type II limit is 2 terabytes. That should be good for a while, but what about the physical limitations of how much can be jammed into the card?

Come on guys, all I asked was a simple question!! Typical of this forum - we are now, metaphorically speaking, discussing the number of angels which can dance on the head of a pin!!

Great stuff!

Keep it up

Money is the factor, imho. Failing that, the limitations are based on FAT (File Allocation Table). The FAT 16 has about a 2.048GB peg out, FAT 32 pegs out at around 2 TB (2000GB) and NTFS pegs out at 16EB (ExaBytes, or 17,179,869,184 TB. This is also 2 (exponent 64 bytes for you math inclined people. In this book, as of 2000, to give you an idea of how big that is, "...it is estimated that all words spoken by humans thruought history would be about 5EB."

Actually, trying to figure out how many angels we can cram into a CF card. :) :D

I have never actually seen flash memory, so I don't know how it is physically configured. I see it in CF cards, and all the other photographic memory cards, plus all the assortment of jump drives that are the hot trinket to hang around your neck at work. :P :) :D

So I'm still wondering how much can storage can be put on (in? ) one card. I have another potential use for CF cards to hold MP3s, so it is of interest to me.
