Parting is such sweet sorrow. I just made a logistics decision which necessitates me giving up my plan to acquire a 400mm f/5.6L. The trade-off is semi-sweet however in that what compels me to hold off on the 400 is an obsession with another lens; that of the Flourite graced Canon 39-790mm f/1.6-2.9L. It'll still take me the better part of a year or longer to acquire this gorgeous piece of glass - but I can dissuade myself no longer. I have to have it!

You have a link to this lens?

Are you joking, right??
There is not such a thing!! a 39-790 f/1.6-2.9? A luminous 20x zoom?. Keep dreaming :) The only lens with those charactersitics is the one included in the XM2 camcorder, and it's not a true 39-790, it has a 39-790 equivalence only!! (actually it's a 4.2-84mm lens)

Guillermo, you're on to me! Drats - I wanted the charade to continue just a bit longer! You call it an XM2, I call it a GL2. The equivalency you speak of is in relation to 35mm, so a 4.2-84mm lens is obviously getting some 'crop factor' magic spun in from its' three CCD's. But I'm not arguing any kind of equivalency for ths bugger in relation to film or digital SLR. A phenominal lens it is for the Pro-sumer MiniDV crowd however. Being that it's Canon, "L" glass, Digital and *cough* capable of digital stills I thought It'd make a fun play on extravagance in light of all the banter about L excess.

I considered buying a sub $1,000.00 MiniDV but I just don't get the controls I want in those packages (I'm rarely accused of doing things half-way) and the XL1-S is just a bit more luggage than I want to carry even though an EF adapter will let it use EF lenses.

For those of you whom are unfamiliar with the XM2/GL2 MiniDV (http://www.canondv.com/gl2/index.html):

Flourite "L" Lens (http://www.canondv.com/gl2/f_fluorite_lens.html)
Focal Length 20x Optical/100x Digital (http://www.canondv.com/gl2/f_zoom_lens.html)

As obsessed as I am with this Photography, my interests range into Digital video as well. At the moment, it is a significant enough interest to put my long lens passion on hold and go after some exceptional video quality. Crap, that means another forum membership!... Hey Pekka, any chance you can add a forum for "Hybrid Digital gear" or other Canon media!? Then I can spend more time here and less time hopping other forums ;).

Everyone can breathe easy now and give Google, FM reviews and your other watchdog sites a rest. The game is up!

since you have a 10D you could get a 45-960mm

all you need is a 28-300 and a 2x TC.
With the 10D 1.6 crop you have 28 = 45 and 300x2=600x1.6=960 (assuming you can put a TC on this lens)

I've seen this Camera attached to a 600mm f/4 L via an adapter...

You know what that means????

There is an EOS adapter for that Camcorder!

You could mount all kinds of cool "L" on it! :)

CDS, I think you saw the XL1 or XL1-S attached to the 600mm. That MiniDV can be fitted with an EF converter to accept EF Lenses. Unfortunately, I don't have the entry fee of $4,300.00 to benefit from that capability ... Oooofta (http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/images/images17.php) <---- Watchdog posted a page on the XL1 w/600mm via EF adapter.

Although this game starts at $2,000.00+; the GL2 is sort of like the 10D of MiniDV camcorders. I figured it still kept me in the now infamous "L" club and would make for some good banter. Not necessarily wrong on both accounts, but not exactly right either...

CDS:
The only interchangeable lens camcorder is the XL1, not the GL2. It has a fixed lens design.

More correctly, the XL1 & XL1s are the only Canon Pro-sumer interchangeable lens MiniDV camcorders. JVC, Panasonic and Sony all have Pro-Level interchangeable lens MiniDV camcorders.

I was thinking of the XL1.. the WHITE one  sorry.

When you said it had "L" optics I jumped to conclusdions in my tiny little head! :)
