Hey all you Canon fanatics................
I recently picked up a used D30 on ebay and thought my Promaster 5700 flash would work with it. Do I need to get a new digital module to make this thing work? It doesn't seem to want to sync with the camera and won't fire on it at all. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks......PhotoDude25

The primary flash mode on the Canon EOS digital cameras is E-TTL.

Does your new flash do that?

My D30 works fully with the newer EZ series of flashguns but with the older EX versions it only basically fires the flash and you have to set everything manually. I am not sure about 3rd party flashguns, but they are probably basic firing only as well.

Hi Bob........I believe it is TTL only, not E-TTL....do I need a completely new flash unit then if not E-TTL?.......PhotoDude...... :? ........

I always thought it was just the opposite: EX flashes worked, but EZ flashes could only be used manually.

Flash remians the greatest mystery in the entire field of photography. My confusion simply grows and grow.

The Promaster was used on my film type Rebel G and worked perfect on it. Just wondering if I just have to replace the module with the new digital module or if I'll have to replace the whole flash unit

The primary flash mode of a D30 is E-TTL. You can get it to flash in manual mode, but it is a bit more work with some math..

What kind of shutter speed are you using? Something within the sync limit of the camera, or otherwise?

I'm in the same boat... the Promaster I have is not E-TTL... it is TTL and worked great with my older film cameras - Plus with my Promaster I believe the sync is only up to 1/90 (I could be wrong, but I remember it wasn't much).

I plan on getting the 550EX and be done with it. I read somewhere that you can sync high speed with the 550.
