If you had to choose one focal length for all your shooting what would it be?
I know in these days of DSLRs & bags full of lenses it's a difficult choice.
OK how about two then?
Mine would be 28mm & 135mm. (35mm equivilant)

When I was shooting film, my favorite was a Vivitar 135mm... Mainly because all my other lenses were at least f5.6 or slower, and the 135 was f2.8.

Since you didn't mention price 8) , and limiting myself to available lenses for the 10D:
Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM (~35 mm on film camera)
Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM (~135 mm)
The 24/1.4mm would stay on the camera unless I were shooting candids and portraits of people or action events.
If limited to one lens, it would be the 50mm/1.4.
I'd have to rediscover myself to live without zooms.

50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8
Great focal length for D10, is my most used lens until weather permits me to get in the woods.

28mm. My "first" camera was my father's AE1-Program and it had that and his 50mm prime. I like the 28mm. It seemed to give more options that any other prime lens.

28mm and 80mm (35mm equivalences) so the dRebel kit lens (29-88 equivalence) and the 50/1.8 (80mm equiv) work fine to me :)
