sorry if its in the wrong section, but what are these actually used for, and what is the meaning of the term "stock photography"

i was thinking they are used for you to cut and paste shots you have taken and putting them in with these backgrounds. am i correct?
is this even feasible, wouldn't it look fake.
just curious. would be interesting to give it a try

would that look natural though, i mean putting a subject in front of this background?

You wold have to do some work with shadows, feathering, blending etc to make them look natural...

They are made to put the subject in front of before you take the pic? ;)

I think the OP would be further confused with this post.

OP: You shoot your subject against, typically, a blue background, and then in an image editing program you replace the blue background with one of these background images.

If that is not clear enough or you want more detail, please ask again.

I think the OP would be further confused with this post. You're right. I misread "Draped fabric, taut surfaces, walls drenched with silk." & thought they were backdrops. I'm going to edit out my other posts so someone else doesn't get confused. (I'll leave my stupid comments in the quotes, though.) :D

thanks guys.
why a blue background though? is that so its easier to cut around the subject, like the hair etc?

why a blue background though? The software uses that color as a guide to what it will ignore when you tell it to put the person in the background. Like you see the weatherman on tv against the weather monitor. Some software uses green.

oh thats right. good idea. what software does that. do you know any off hand.
is it any blue background. for example a blue sheet or blue paper or is it a special blue background you have to buy?
thanks

Generally, its a special blue background or paint you have to buy.
