When viewing my images on the www, I love the smooth as silk skies, etc. But when printed these same smooth images look fake and cold. Does anyone else think so? What do you do about it.

I have been playing with different techniques to simulate film grain, and deciding how to apply them to both web and paper output. I can't show the paper output, but here is a web one.

For web, I am leaning a bit towards no grain, or less grain, but on paper it seems I prefer the grain look. Is this something that my kids will scratch their heads about, like pops and clicks on a record v.s. a CD?

At least on the image you posted it does not LOOK like grain. It looks more mottled than grainy. What are you using. I find the grain simulator in PSE2 works just fine. (Duplicate Layer, Apply Textures\Grain (Regular, Int = 40 Cont = 70), Desaturate layer almost to monochrome, set layer opacity to about 25%.)

I am very challenged in resolving the flat sky issue. One of the problems with digital is poor contrast that makes everything look flat, such as your sky. I wouldn't add Grain as it is more annoying that anything even though it is comforting on some level.

These image are being shown at 800 wide and suffer from the compression. I am not sure why they are being shown that way, except that Pekka's forum program must do this. In any case they are able to be seen in their saved size here:

The grain still isn't so great at websize, but at least the file is now visible at it's saved size.
