So why is it that the 10D has a bunch of aftermarket resellers of batteries, but the 1D/1Ds/1DMKII doesn't? Best price I've seen so far is $119.00, for Canon OEM. Anyone know a better price?

Because "normal" people by the tens of thousands own the 10D/D60/D30/300D + ALL of the G series... so there is a huge market for the BP511
The MkII battery is in the 1D and 1Ds... thats it.. and 1D owners are willing to spend $119.00 for the real thing.
Personally,. I hate NIMH,. and loive Lithium,.
Once I get my MkII I will look at the voltage and contacts,. and see if I can make a dual BP-511 adapter.. :) (becuase I'm "normal" I like the deals too :) )

That is one thing that bothers me about the MK II. I wonder why Canon opted to stay with NiMH instead of going LiON? It is my understanding that the MK II handles the power better, but why not switch over? I guess to keep compatablity, but wouldn't a double BP511 option be nice for those of use upgrading to the MK II?
I have heard the NiMH batteries have to be cycled so often to keep them performing. This is something I will have to learn. You get spoiled with BP-511s because they are so dependable.

The charger allows for cycling so it isn't that much of a pain. They have obviously looked at their target market where users will already have an investment in that battery technology. I personally don't find it a handicap, although I do prefer batteries where you don't have to worry about them developing a memory.
There are no third party batteries. It is Canon or nothing.
I would imagine that MK-II's replacement, whenever it comes, is the time they will change the battery technology.

What's really pathetic about it is that the darn camera doesn't know whether the minerals are Lithium or Nickel!
With the 1DMkii,. or at any time,. Canon could make a battery the exact same size and shape as the npe3.. but just fill it with Lithium cells instead.
They would just have to KEY it so it could not be inserted in the old charger (it would require a different charger,. that's all)
Just like there are Alkyline, NiCad, Nimh, and lithium AA batts,. they could just make a Lithium NP-e3.. it would last longer and be lighter too.

Just some info for you soon to be Mark II owners with the average temp of 68 degrees there is an expected count of 1200 pics. I was attending the WPPI today and of course Canon was showing off their new toy. I also witnessed a poset print from the mark II unedited and it was awsome (jpeg file not RAW).
