View Full Version : Can we stop with the L threads

People are going to do what they are going to do.
I'm spending $1300 on the 100-400 L and then $400 on the 28-$135 as well as the $60 on the f/1.8 50mm and i also have the kit lens for the wider stuff.
My point is thats what i want...what i feel i need.
When someone asks what lens they should get, then tell them to do some research. I have and i realized that although i'd love to have the 24-70 L....i just dont need it. Thats me, maybe you do.
I'm not insulting anyone, i just dont understand the sudden fuss on these boards...it's intreaging to me

You're not the only one who feels this way, but apparently you are still in the minority.
Good luck with your lenses.

Correct me if I'm wrong but... Is this not the forum where we all discuss camera gear & new technologies?
If the subject tires you, then don't read/engage youself in the conversation. Just take a break by visiting another of the many excellent forums on this site.
Remember, variety is this spice of life.

Problem with this otherwise great forum is that the amount of new threads pushes all the stuff on n:th page in just few days. When I first signed in here, the messages stayed on page 1 for weeks or months, which was too slow of course. Now it seems that there are multiple threads of same stuff and lots of "got my first xyz" and "my zxy is on mail" -threads.

I've been a member of this forum since July, and the amount of chatter has doubled since then----actually, slightly more than doubled based on the number of pages generated each month. There are two reasons that I can see: a lot more members, AND Pekka's excellent reconstruction of the forum which makes it more inviting to new subscribers, and easier and more intuitive for them to use.
Looking back on the quality of the content back then, things now are not any better or worse.....there's just a lot more of the same sort of thing. There is a certain redundancy to a lot of the threads, and the reoccurring topics are almost humorous in their predictability. I think it is very much to the credit of the member of this forum that someone is always willing to jump in and answer a question that might have been covered just a couple days earlier. The friendliness of this board makes it different than all the others. Let’s keep it that way, even if it means answering “Which Lens Should I Buys?” over and over again.

And I think people that don't frequent this group regularly or are new to this group make it seem as though the topic comes up frequently. Personally, I just avoid a thread that doesn't interest me. As a few indicated, this is the place for those kinds of questions.

I think this forum needs more moderating. i.e Deleting/closing/moving posts.
As more people are visiting there are more and more junk posts.
The FAQ button is in bold at the top of the page - why not make the search button bold too - people should start using it instead of asking the same question that was probably posted a week ago.
By far the most popular topic in this forum is the 'what lens' question. I suggested a while back that it might be better to have a forum relating to lenses only. Or even a "questions & answers" forum.
One thing I personally can't abide is "look what I bought" or "look what the mailman just delivered" - this is irrelevent crap and has no place in this forum

I know I haven't been on this forum that long, and I am still getting my feet wet, but I can excuse the age old "which lens" threads. I myself just posted one a few days ago. The reason I can excuse it is for the simple reason that everyone is different and has different needs. Canon offers what seems to be an endless number of lenses, and many different cameras. Even though the "search" button is at the top of the screen, it doesn't necessarily mean that there will be another thread that answers your question. I have a DRebel and have one specific lens that I wanted to buy. I did a search for that specific lens and came up with 0 threads that contained the name of that lens. So...the only way to get info was to start a new thread. I think the same can be said of most of the people who post lens questions. And this forum definately isn't unique in that regards. I also frequent a home theater forum, and the "which speakers should I buy" thread is just as common there.
However, like evilenglishman said, I am starting to tire of the "look what I got" threads. I know, we are all happy that you got a $2000 lens, but these threads always seem to turn into some sort of photography "inside joke" forum. Everyone uses these acronyms that I have no clue as to what they mean. I mean, everyone is free to post what they want...but these types of threads are causing threads started by those seeking legitimate advice to be pushed to the second page VERY quickly. I started a lens hood thread last night about 8:00 and it was already on the second page by this morning (7:30).

I looked through those, and yes, a number of them could easily have been posted in the "post-processing and printing" forum. A few are less easily placed into any catagory. Perhaps there needs to be a "general" category for all the normal, and often enjoyable chit-chat that accompanies any forum.
I will note, however, that a couple of the most popular threads are mentioned on your list. Its apparent that folks like reading and responding to these topics, regardless of whether they match the forum category or not.

2. The post processing forum needs to be moved to the top of its section as people are either not seeing it and assuming it doesnt exist, or know they can post questions wherever they want

You're assessment of most of these is correct. Several of these have more applicability to other boards in the forum, and maybe a gentle nudge in that direction by a moderator would be helpful. I believe that one of the reasons people gravitate to the EOS DSLR board is a presumption (somewhat erroneous) that the most knowledgeable people in the forum hang out here, and the discussion will somehow be on a higher plane.
The ‘Look What I Got’ threads hurt nobody. There is camaraderie in this forum and it makes some people anxious to share such information with their friends. The less altruistic justification for such posts, but ultimately the one easier to justify to the ‘no-nonsense-in-the-forum’ crowd is that it is helpful to know how people are spending their money, and what trends may be starting to develop in the field.
The threads that are pure silliness (the discussion of the proper spelling of ‘lense’) are simply fun, and when is that a bad thing? If you want to kill the spirit of a forum, eliminate humor. I don’t know if you’ve paid close attention or not, but some of the funniest people in this board are also the most knowledgeable, yourself included. Others of us, who don’t have the breadth of experience as some of you, enjoy these exchanges; they give us an opportunity to make our presence known where we otherwise might have nothing to contribute. Name one other venue where friends gather together (other than a funeral) where a couple jokes or good-natured banter aren’t the order of the day.
These problems are self-correcting in time. People come and people go, but the good ones will stay a while and contribute.
If it requires a little extra reading to sort the wheat from the chaff, it’s a small price to pay.

I don't think deleting the more popular threads is in the best interest of the forum. People often make small talk, regardless of whether it is in a forum or in real life. That is what gives a forum its "flavour". But I agree that moving post-processing threads quickly to that category with a bold "MOVED TO..." designation would help steer people to the right place. Many forums do this, though many also have more heavy-handed moderators.
As well, a general interest forum might be a great place where all minds can get together and discuss things that are of interest, but don't necessarily fall into any exact category.

There was a suggestion that the forum needs more attention from the moderator(s). Personally, unless we (all the users) of the forum are willing to increase the compensation for the moderators, I would not recommend it.
In other words, this is a free forum, and, as I understand it, moderated by volunteers. I applaud them for keeping it as well as they do. Other than increasing the real costs to Pekka to store lengthy lists of homophones, etc., it is part of the territory - free.

Pekka used to have a board called "The Word is Free," or some such thing. It was rarely used, and was generally an outlet for people to vent on world issues, paranormal babble, and a wide variety of other inane, non-photography related issues. It was boring.
If we try too hard to compartmentalize each and every thread that comes through here, we will only serve to fragment the forum. You folks are old enough and smart enough to figure out what you want to read or don’t want to read. Simply skip over what doesn’t interest you; you don’t need any more boards to accomplish that.
 How about this? I have no interest in flash photography, and I never read those threads. Besides, flash photography is not unique to DSLRs, and the EX flashes work on other Canon cameras. Let’s create a separate ‘Canon Flash’ board so that I don’t have to look at those threads.
Does this make sense to anyone besides me? :?

NO. J/K...
You're right about the fragmenting effect - I'd really hate to separate things too much. Right now, I'm of the mind that things aren't really bad here.
As you said, there is a certain sense of "belonging" (look up "Maslow's heirarchy of needs") that exists in some of the forums, that allows people to feel as though they are among friends. The fact that some of the most populated threads in the EOS forum are not really equipment-specific, but are more of the "vanity" variety. They are loosely camera-related, but are also subject matter with which many of us can relate. If people cannot speak freely on such subject matter, that may take away from the forum.
Perhaps this is more a study of psychology than anything else. Pekka built the forum, and the general population of Canon users have populated it in the manner in which they did. One might ask "Why?".

Sounds a lot like "Talk about photography"...
And I do remember, "The Word is free" and your right,. it was pretty empty.
I suggested "OT" becuase it really covers everything,. and best of all,. it is standard "forum jargon" that everyone uses.. so anyone hitting the Forum will know exactly what it means.
In some of the Forums I have frequented the "OT" or "Cantina" type sections are the busiest..
But that may not happen here.. I agree. We do seem to like to stick to a certain section,. I have no idea why?

Hey, Tom, those cat pictures are off topic here. Don't they belong in the Share Photos forum under "Pets" or maybe even in the "Off Topic" forum I've been reading about these last couple of threads? ??? Come on, get your act together, will ya

But they're EOS cats, or at least one of them is. Try to guess which one was taken with the 10D and which were taken with the S-400. If you guess right, you can have my spot on the 1D Mk II list as it stands now. :D

The first pic was taken with the 10D, the other two were taken with the S400.
Can I have my place in the queue now?

No thanks. I already have a spot. AAMOF, I think I'm just one ahead of you in that same queue!

This is a test. All those who are unable to follow this thread will have to shoot three cat shots (1 top / 1 side/ 1 bottom) and list at least three methods how to get me higher on 1D Mark II order list or you will be banned.
And top (sort-of):

As for the second question, I'd suggest e-bay, or visit Broadway Camera. I'm sure that they have one already waiting for you. :D
Tom,
Velcro?
