Or answer ads on there for people needing photography?

How much luck do you have?

I recently placed an ad just to see how many photographers responded. I got over 75 photographers with nice web pages emailing me within 12 hours!!!

I look for jobs but don't advertise on craigslist or myspace. I have a couple of friends that advertise and get jobs and it works good for them. I just think its to much traffic for my needs.

The Portland Carig's list has a lot of photographers that advertise on it. Some of them even have some pretty good pictures on their web site although a lot of them seem to be very new at trying to make money with photography. I get a kick out of some of the ads I read some just have me shaking my head. I read the ads by people looking for photographers and some sound interesting but I've not responded to any figuring they get a bunch of responses. I did send some e-mail to one person advertising dog photographery since I've been doing that for years and offered to give her some pointers to improve her work. She said she didn't listen to critisisum because it just discouraged her. I guess that is one way to look at it, although she could have used the help. :D

I've also wondered how well some of these people do advertising on Craig's List. It doesn't cost them anything, so the only thing the photographers are out of is a little bit of their time spent posting every day or so.

So you posted on there pertending to need a photographer? Sounds like you got a good response.

I would tend to agree that the majority of those advertising on craiglist are the weekend warriors that are just starting out. Just because it is a free vehicle doesn't mean that it is not effective.

I've seen some rather large and established studios also advertising on there. I actually spoke to one and he said that he picks up 3 or 4 weddings each year from there. His receptionist is the one that keeps putting it on there every week.

I have not advertised my photography there but I would not say I would never. I did try selling a car there and got some scammer traffic and a bunch of car dealers trying to get me to trade it in for something new. I was just trying to go down one vehicle.

There was a thread a few months ago in the wedding forum (I think) about this subject. It got rather heated as there were those that thought by advertising there you were bringing yourself down to the levels of the scammers of the world.

No doubt that craiglist gets alot of traffic. Any advertising that you can do for this much exposure and is free is probably worth it. You just have to get past the mindset that it is full of scammers.

That seems to be the prevailing sentiment. The OP might consider www.weDJ.com (http://www.weDJ.com) as an alternative.

Are you advertising your services as a wedding photographer?

I don't know, but every time I read craigslist I feel like I was just at one of the seedier parts of town, or that 90% of the things there are all scams/stolen/ you know the hair on the back of you neck stands on end kinda feelings.

I know that it is suposed to be a reputable place to advertize or even a good place to get things at, but that little warning voice seems to be talking when ever I see things on there.

I frequented a camera store where I last lived in an area of the city that I would never go into at night. It was a wonderful store. You can make it anything you want.

If one decided to advertise there, you can always turn down any inquiries that you do get.

It's another one of those things that each person has to decide for themselves. I very well may do some there when my new website is done. In the largest city closest to me there are a few reputable photographers advertising on it and you continue to see their ads being reloaded all the time. I have to assume that they wouldn't continue to use it if it didn't provide any results for them. The customer just has to weed their way through the 200.00 weddings and the 2000.00 weddings and find one that works for them.

I haven't visited craigslist recently, but in the past, whenever I read an ad from somebody requesting photography, they either expected a ridiculously low rate or something for free. There were a lot of "We're looking for a student photographer" type things out there.

I would agree with mjordan about some of the photographers advertising as well. "Pick me because I have expensive equipment!"
