I am looking into the possibilty of triggering the G2 shutter at a very specific instance. I'm not sure exactly why I want to do this yet. :)

I'm thinking something along the lines of capturing a balloon burst or other similar split second action using maybe a sensor or other synchronised means.

I know this is a long shot considering the G2 specs and problems that would arise with shutter lag, but does anyone have any ideas/experiences regarding capturing a specific moment (using software, hardware or otherwise)?

For now, I'll assume the answer is "you need specialised equipment, including a different camera for that", but thought I'd put it out there.

In order to be able to shoot such actions you will need some form of sequensing of the actions needed.
In establising this sequence you have to take the shutter delay into account. eg. detect the arrow long before it reaches the ballon an fire the camera.
However, this requires fixed timing and that is not going to be the case if your G2 is busy with autofocus etc.
Therefore you will need to use manual operation to get a fixed shutter lag.

Happy shooting,
Jaap

Many of the now famous bullet through balloon etc pix were make using a bulb shutter setting, a darkened studio and a sound sensor setting off the flash, strobe etc. Stopping the fast moving pictoral element relied on the very short duration of the flash/strobe rather than the sutter. Even mechancial shutters have enough play to make them unreliable for timing something this precise. Have a "bang up time" experimenting.

Hi

An even more basic question; how can one trigger the camera when standing behind it without usinf the shutter button.

The IR control is on the frount.....

I've experimented with using a DJ's strobe light and my g2 on a long shutter (1 sec) to take highspeed pics.

My last set are here: http://216.231.49.37/pics/4-13-02/

I just got a 420ex and have yet to try it as the light source (either manually triggered, or via the camera).
