Browsing around, I found an article on Photographic Magazine's site that is titled "Canon's Record Profits," but it seems like it turns into an article about Nikon instead.

Apparently, Nikon believes its market share will be 40%. Does anyone know what Canon's is?

Here's the article:

Canon's Record Profits
By PHOTOgraphic Staff

February 03, 2004 — Canon Inc. is riding the digital wave adroitly. On January 30, the company's subsidiary, Canon USA announced that the corporation posted net sales of 3,198.1 billion yen ($29.9 billion) for fiscal year 2003, an increase of 8.8% over fiscal 2002. A nice gain, but Canon's net income for the year rose by 44.6%, reaching 275.7 billion yen ($ 2.57 billion).

The company is enjoying strong sales of digital cameras and laser printers as well as what it terms "color network multifunction devices" (copiers) and "consumables," meaning ink, paper, and other supplies. Sales overall are brisk, but the sharp rise in profits was due to cost-cutting measures initiated the previous year.

For the fourth quarter of 2003, which includes the winter holiday shopping period, Canon reported fourth-quarter revenue of 894.9 billion yen ($ 8.36 billion), a 3.9% increase over the same period in 2002. Net income was 75.0 billion yen ($7.01 billion), a 24.8% gain over the fourth quarter 2002.

Of Canon's $29.9 billion in worldwide revenues last year, $9.8 billion came from Canon Americas - North, South, and Central America, and 75% of Canon's revenue was generated outside Japan. 2003 was the fourth year in a row that Canon had exceeded the previous year's performance. The company predicts similar results for fiscal 2004, with projections of 15 million digital cameras to be sold this year, almost twice the 8.6 million that were sold in 2003.

Analysts estimate the global market for digital cameras at 70 million for 2004. Nikon Corporation should command a significant slice of the pie by 2005 - approximately 30%, according to the financial press, with major inroads made in the digital SLR market. Nikon expects its D70 model to be among the most popular digital SLRs this year and next. The camera will retail for around $1000 when it goes on sale worldwide in March and will compete directly with Canon's "EOS Kiss Digital" model.

For the company's fiscal year ending March 31, Nikon estimates its share of the global market in digital cameras (at all price points) at about 30%. For the coming year, Nikon predicts gains that will give it approximately 40% of the market.
