CDS,
Them there birds look a little strange for Canada geese. Might they be Brant?

I think Brandt's is correct,. definately not Canada geese,. they are much smaller and make a the sweetest little sound..

Does it look dull in color to you ?

The "sweet sound" makes them brant. Really nice image. (don't want to say "shot" with TomW lurking around....makes him get all glassy eyed)

Nice geese pictures, everybody, really nice.

CDS, what lens did you use to get the background blurred out like that. Unless you were quite a distance from the flock you must have used a shorter telephoto, right?

CyberDyneSystems

No,. it's my 500mm,. I'm looking for exif now.. but I think the aperture was up about f/7-8 or so.....

hang on..........

Wow,. how's this for memory? ... f/7.1 ISO 200, 1/640 shutter.

I was quite far away,. they were about 1/3 of the way across a small salt water pond.. partially frozen over.

Thanks for the info, CDS.

BTW, if you get a free moment, I was wondering if you could do me a big favor and take two shots of something, one using a focal length of 400mm and another using 500mm. I'm just curious as to what the difference is in terms of angle of view between the two. I already have a 100-400 and I'm wondering if a 500 is going to make a big difference.

Thanks.

I can do it,. but currently the only way I can get to 400mm is with a 2X t-con on a 70-200mm....

(unlike some people I know who can do it with 4 different combos)

200 x 2 is fine. I just need a visual of a 400 vs 500 so that'll work just fine, too.

Thanks again.

Tom W. I like the colors in your photos a lot,. last night I think I solved my color management issues,.. (well at least got them back to where they had been which is a big improvement) ...indeed my most recent RAW coversions will need to be redone to make them have the "punch" i like to see.

JZaun,

That Canada goose is wondering what all these little fellows are on about.. the Brandt's are maybe 1/2 the size of a Canada goose.. very cute.

BTW, CDS, is that a gull I see sitting in the pond in the background or a white duck or goose with gray wings?

Sad to say this was not taken with the 10D but with the old Minolta 7H1 but these are definately geese.

Tom,
Believe it or not this flock is in there almost all year round except for the really cold spells. They keep the water open by paddling around 24/7.
I'm heading out there in a couple of weeks and will post the results.
Check list: 1 stick CIL...check
1 Bic lighter....check

If this will help... 100-400 @ 400, and with 1.4TC added:

http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/hawk_400_560.jpg

You lose AF and you're stuck at f/8, but it works.

CyberDyneSystems
24th of February 2004 (Tue), 19:02
So 400mm Vs. 560mm...

Therefore the difference between 400 and 500 is not a huge leap..
And unfortunately my particular 500mm won't even AF reliably with a 1.4X ... (least not with the 10D  )

A lot of birders use the 400mm f/5.6.
Another popular choice is the 300mm f/4 IS with a 1.4X tc (420mm @ f/5.6 and IS)

Scottes

I'm wishing for more than 560 for birding (actually 540 in this case - darned push-pull zoom).

He was about 45-50 feet away, he's not small, and this is full-frame.
http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/hawk_fullframe.jpg

I'd love a bit more reach. Like 1200mm.

One important rule to remember, Ian - If you're going to use dynamite while hunting, do NOT bring a well-trained retriever or any other hunting dog that likes chasing sticks. :)

HEY GUYS -- All of these shots are super.

Yes CDS's is a tad dull,
* Ian's has a tad better light.
** Ian's white gulls are a lovey color (one Quebec pro on TV stepped into towards the flock and set abalze against the sky as background).
*** Scotts hawk is remarkable.. and the TC is even better.
**** Finally I love Jerry's goose .. but prefer to see it rotated 5 deg and cropped as so:
http://members.rogers.com/hleigh/GOOSE.jpg

So gentlemen the challenge now is for one of you guys to win the wildlife contest before the year is out. Whay not a collborative effort? Why not post on the critique corner and ask; "Will this win ?" and "If not , why not?" . There we will all push for gold!

Scottes

But only if CDS can't re-enter shot #3.

I've give my left battery for a shot like that.

Sounds like fun to me. What should the subject be? Ducks and geese in general? Any wildlife (except for the parties at CDS's place  )
Now I have to pray that there is no more snow and that the birds start coming back up here :)
Oh and just to keep Birders Unlimited off my back, the gulls are snowgeese
Gentlemen, start your BG :!: -ED3's

I am a new guy and got lucky on that shot but I would love to see what you guys come up with. With my little 300mm I will have to work harder but it could be fun... Count me in. I suggest the photo must be taken during the contest ( no oldies) as done in the other contest.

Go for it. Who will head it up?.

Hmmm... If we get CDS to head it up he can't enter.

And a "no butt shots" rule will rule out IanD.

What other rules can we invent to swing this our way?
