Beautiful, CDS! :)

What kind of gimble-type head did you get, if you don't mind my asking?

The CHEAP one!!!!!!!

It's a Manfrotto.. it costs $150.00 (less than a high end ballhead!) as opposed to the Wimberly and Kirk whcih are about $550.00

And I think the Manfrotto is perfect!

Yeah, I was looking into that one as well but I wasn't sure about hanging a lens on it upside down, especially when using a quick-relelase plate. I just had these nasty visions of the qr plate coming off all by itself.

So how do you find it, hanging you heavy lens upside-down?

What lense did you use to get that awsome shot?

CyberDyneSystems

tpinchback,

It's a Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX

PacAce,. Oddly the photo in ALL the catalogs is wrong!

You don't mount it upside down,.

I don't have any pics of my gear,. but I'll borrow Kurt Jones rig!

These photos also show how MUCH more substantial the rig is as opposed to the catalog shots,. for some reason at B&H it looks flimsy. It's NOT it is ROCK Solid overbuilt! :)

You can get the thing balanced perfectly,... And it comes with a dovetailed QR plate assembly,. you know the type that costs over $100.00 on it's own,. compared to the Wimberly,. you are getting the whole gimble and QR for the cost of the Wimberly QR assembly!

That's great! Thanks for the info, CDS. You've sold me on it! :D

BTW, when I first saw the picture of the big white lens I was thinking to myself, "Man, that's a beautiful lens. Funny I don't ever remember seeing a Sigma 500 (or any Sigma for that matter) painted white before.

Awesome shot birdman  It amazes me how people that shoot wildlife are still able to get a good composition, on top of all that goes with it.... the panning, the focus, and all of the exposure aspects. Incredible. I don't know if I could do it. I'd have fun trying though!

Great shot!

Nice shot, even if it is a ****ehawk

Real dynamics going on in that shot, big difference in light levels across the frame but still all nicely balanced. I usually get blown highlights all over the birds or total shadow in the background.

Good job.

Cheers

Ian

Thanks Laz,.
... as much as i hate to admit,. for this type of thing the equipment makes a huge difference.

Yes you can get the shots with middle of the road equipment, you can "get lucky" but as your lenses get longer and the tripod better you pull luck over to your side of the road so you can get a shot at it!

Ian, thanks :)
I was literally practicing my abilities for catching them on the wing.. and well,. ****eHawks fly just as well as most other birds!

As far as exposure,. my 10D loves this lens! No matter what I do, if I give the 10D the ability to tweek it with AV or TV or even P.. I allways seem to get a really nice exposure. (sure I can mess it up in "M": with the best of them! )

No other lens I have is as likely to get the 10D to do things spot on,. not even the 70-200 IS "L".. which tends to underexpose if the 10D is left to it's own ideas of exposure.

I concur with the above comments, great shot.
I especially like the just right arc of the wings, the overall placement of the bird (cropped? or were you able to position the bird this nicely from the start?), the sharpness, and the contrast of the bird with a nice dark blue background.
Don't care what kind of bird it is beautiful in this photo.

Wow, thanks guys,. This was "practice" ... as it was "just a gull this and the "Quahog" shots were me trying to scrape the rust off of my skilss after a long winter,. and just get some practice in...

I was so oleased with the results... I had to post :)

I am glad you liked them too.. I have to admit,. gulls let me get a little closer than a lot of other birds would...

I'd just love to get this close to a diving Osprey or Kingfisher!
