Just got my first Digital SLR and would like some advice on a good lens to purchase for it. I like to do mostly portrait and and architectural, with some landscape. I am very much starting my journey into digital photography. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time:)

With a $500 budget, I'd suggest a 24-70 f/2.8 type lens. Either the Tamron or the Sigma. Both can be found for around $300. Then you could also get a 430EX flash for about $200. This combination would keep you busy learning for quite a while. :-) ....and the learning NEVER ends! BTW the Tamron is a 28-75mm, and from what I've read, it's a little sharper than the Sigma. You can look at the lens archives section where you'll find comparisons.

If you're more interested in landscapes and architectural photography, the 17-40L is a pretty good choice (and in your price range)...and hey...I just might have one for sale! :-)
