There was a thread today about carrying cameras with long lenses by the lens so as to reduce stress on the lens mount. My question is this, I have a Bigma mounted on my 20D. I usually just out the camera strap over my shoulder when I am out about. Is this causing too much undo stress on the lens mount by having the Bigma just dangling down like that?

The lens mount will handle the load just fine. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I have yet to hear of a lens mount going bad simply from carrying a lens around on the camera. I'm sure it's happened to someone somewhere but I really wouldn't loose sleep over it.

If it is just dangling from the shoulder, I wouldn't think much about it. But in shooting pisition, you ought to have one hand under the lens simply for a more stable shooting platoform!

This subject came up on a different forum. The answer there was yes it would cause to much stress, and it was best not to let it hang. So I usually carry the EX 100-300 , with my hand around the lens or tripod collar. I find I can aim it this way faster, anyway.

But that was in regard to an XT, so that might make a difference.

The 100-300 only weighs 1.2 lb. A lot of lenses weigh far more and have a greater lever arm that that! A 1DsII body weighs TWICE that! Quit worrying!

The EX 100-300 f/4 weighs 3.2 pounds. I don't worry about it. Even before I read about the stress factor . I carred it by hand. I didn't like that weight hanging around my neck.

I let my 100-300EX, 70-200f2.8IS, and 100-400IS "dangle" on my bodies with my POTN strap. I normally don't think about it. Would I "dangle" a 120-300f2.8? Not sure about that.

Canon would test this for hours on end, untill the mount split from the camera etc. No need to worry, just dont stick a 600mm on a 300d and use it as a light saber!

If Canon thought a heavy lens could cause stress to the mount, they would have given a warning in the camera owners manual.

I seldom carry my Sigma 50-500 dangling from the shoulder strap, not so much because I am afraid of damaging the lens mount as the fact that I don't like it swinging around. I sometimes let it hang by the shoulder strap if I am using a second camera with a wider angle lens. Most of the time when I carry the Bigma without a tripod I turn the tripod ring so that it is at the top and use it like the handle on a brief case. It even has finger grooves for this purpose. Other times I carry it in the crook of my left arm. If I am using a tripod, the lens is mounted on the tripod and I just put the tripod over my shoulder. The lens mount is only supporting the weight of the camera. I make sure the shoulder strap is around one of the tripod legs so that if lens should come loose it will be caught by the strap before it hits the ground.

On the basis that my 300 2.8 IS L has a mass around 3x that of my body (30D), I'll be using the strap supplied with the lens (it has its own strap lugs) rather than the body.

I don't have any such concerns with my next-biggest lens - the 70-200 2.8 IS L.

But while we're talking about stress on lens mounts (and apologies if this takes us slightly off-topic...:o) - I'll swear I have more rotational-play on the 30D than I used to. It's only a tiny movement, but more than enough to feel.

If only I still had my old 350D body to compare it with... Anyone else had similar concerns?

Is this with all lenses or just one? My 300 f4 is a looser fit than the others.

The Canon USA web site must have the wrong information then!

FWIW, it's a Sigma lens.

I thought the EX gave it away !;)

I emailed Canon about the stress thing. If and when they reply I'll post it.
All my other lens I just "dangle". But the 100-300 just feels better in my hands. But I've started using a new monopod so it will be on it , some of the time.

When Canon thinks it is time for you to be aware of the weight of the lens, they add separate strap lugs to the lens itself. Take a look at the weights of the Canon lenses with auxiliary strap lugs, if your third party lens weighs as much or more...I would seriously start thinking about how I carried it.

All - now that I've noticed it. I haven't really spent much time comparing them - and I did notice it the first time I fitted the 300, so it might be slightly looser than the others.

Most people aren't going to be running around dangling a bigma from a neck strap! HAHAH!! Most mortal people have one on a pod. Lenses like the 70-200L, etc... no worries!!

I personally wouldn't trust a lens that size on a neck strap...I dont think i'll harm a 30D either. An XT...ehh... maybe with its plastic body!!

I second woolburr. Usualy lens that gonna be too dangerous for the mount have dedicated hook for a strap on the lens body. Look at the sigma 500 f4.5, if the manufacturer ingenior think it need it, they put it in the design.

Like I said . I emailed Canon about this. This is what they said,

" We do not recommend letting the camera "dangle" around your neck when a
lens of more than 1.5 pounds is connected."

In the email, I had asked them about the XT and 30D. I also ask them about lens weighing 3 pounds or more. Looks like they think 1.5 pounds is the limit .

FWIW, they'd probably also say they only recommend Canon lenses and filters and TCs and ...

I've gotten some crazy replies from their CS which makes me think they are not unlike the high school kids that work at RitzCamera (no offense if you're a high school kid who works at RitzCamera).

LOL ! What I posted was all they said. I don't worry about it. I like carrying them by hand anyway. Just thought it would be interesting to see what they said.
